Prime Minister Pays Tribute to Veteran Leader
In his message, Modi said he was deeply saddened to learn about the death of Govindbhai Parmar, describing him as a leader who consistently worked for community welfare. He also offered prayers for the peace of Parmar’s soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family during their time of grief.
Political leaders and party workers from across Gujarat also reacted to the news, recalling Parmar’s long association with grassroots politics and his close engagement with the residents of his constituency.
A Political Journey Rooted in Rural Communities
Govind Parmar was born in 1943 and grew up in a modest family background in Gujarat. Despite limited formal education, having studied only up to Class 7, he remained actively involved in social activities and gradually built a reputation as a community-focused leader.
Over the years, Parmar established strong connections with farmers and residents across the Charotar region, an agriculturally significant area in central Gujarat. His work at the local level helped him gain recognition among voters, especially in rural communities.
Supporters often described him as a grassroots politician who preferred direct interaction with people and frequently participated in community initiatives and local development discussions.
Electoral Success in the Umreth Constituency
Parmar first entered the Gujarat Legislative Assembly after winning the Umreth seat in the 2017 state elections. Representing the Bharatiya Janata Party, he secured victory against Congress candidate Kapilaben Chavda by a margin of 1,883 votes.
The Umreth constituency had historically seen frequent shifts between political parties, making it a challenging electoral battleground. Parmar’s win in 2017 marked a significant moment for the BJP in the region.
His electoral success continued in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections, where he again contested from Umreth as the BJP candidate. Parmar received 95,639 votes and defeated Jayant Patel of the Nationalist Congress Party by a margin of 26,717 votes, securing his second consecutive term as MLA.
Legacy of Community Engagement
Throughout his political career, Parmar remained closely connected with the local population. Party members and residents of Anand district recalled his regular presence at community events, village meetings, and local development discussions.
Leaders from the BJP’s local units in Umreth and nearby areas paid tribute to Parmar, remembering him as a committed public servant who maintained strong relationships with constituents.
His passing has created a sense of loss among party workers and supporters in the region, many of whom acknowledged his contributions to local political and social life.
Vacancy in Umreth Assembly Seat
With the death of Govind Parmar, the Umreth Assembly constituency in Anand district has now fallen vacant. Further decisions regarding the seat, including the possibility of a by-election, will be taken by the Election Commission in accordance with constitutional procedures.
Parmar is survived by his family members, who have received condolences from political leaders, party workers, and residents across Gujarat.
