Tourism – Electric Double-Decker Buses Return to Delhi Roads
Tourism – Nearly four decades after the last double-decker buses disappeared from the Capital’s streets, the iconic vehicles have made a comeback in a new, eco-friendly form. On Friday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated an electric, open-top double-decker bus service designed exclusively for tourists, marking a renewed push to promote the city’s travel and heritage sector.

A New Chapter for City Tourism
The launch ceremony took place at Rafi Marg, where the Chief Minister flagged off the first bus under the banner “Dekho Meri Dilli.” Operated by Delhi Tourism, the service aims to offer both domestic and international visitors a curated sightseeing experience across major landmarks in the city.
The newly introduced bus can accommodate 63 passengers and features a panoramic upper deck that allows travelers to enjoy expansive views of Delhi’s skyline. Equipped with modern facilities and advanced safety features, the vehicle is designed to ensure a comfortable and secure journey for tourists exploring the Capital.
Blending Heritage with Modern Growth
Officials said the route has been carefully planned to showcase Delhi’s historic legacy alongside its contemporary developments. During the inaugural ride, the bus passed through prominent stretches including India Gate, Akbar Road and Teen Murti Marg before reaching the Prime Minister’s Museum.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister emphasized that the service reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening tourism infrastructure while promoting environmentally responsible transport solutions. She noted that Delhi is steadily building a global profile not only through its historical monuments but also through newly developed landmarks such as Bharat Mandapam, Yashobhoomi, the new Parliament building and the Central Vista redevelopment project.
According to her, the objective is to offer visitors a comprehensive glimpse of the city’s evolution—where centuries-old heritage structures stand alongside modern architectural achievements.
Focus on Sustainability and Green Mobility
The reintroduction of double-decker buses in electric form also aligns with broader efforts to reduce urban pollution. As a zero-emission vehicle, the bus contributes to lowering carbon output and supports the Capital’s transition toward clean mobility solutions.
Officials highlighted that sustainable tourism remains a key priority. By combining sightseeing with electric transport, the initiative aims to promote clean travel options without compromising on visitor experience. The open-top design is expected to enhance the appeal of city tours, particularly for first-time travelers seeking a distinctive way to explore Delhi.
Public-Private Partnership Model
The Chief Minister described the initiative as a practical example of policy planning backed by effective implementation. She said the project has been rolled out under the public-private partnership model, which enables collaboration between government agencies and private stakeholders to deliver improved services.
Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra, who joined the inaugural ride along with senior officials and media representatives, said the introduction of the electric double-decker bus represents more than just the addition of a new vehicle. In his view, it signals Delhi’s intent to strengthen its position on the global tourism map by offering innovative and sustainable travel experiences.
Reviving a Familiar Sight
For many long-time residents, double-decker buses once symbolized the rhythm of daily life in the Capital. Their return—this time as electric tourist coaches—blends nostalgia with modern technology. While the earlier fleet primarily served regular commuters, the new version focuses on curated sightseeing, catering specifically to visitors eager to experience the city’s landmarks in a structured tour.
Officials believe the initiative will add fresh momentum to Delhi’s tourism sector, especially as the city continues to host international events and conferences. By integrating clean energy transport with guided city tours, the government hopes to enhance visitor satisfaction while advancing environmental goals.
With its open-top design, upgraded features and zero-emission technology, the electric double-decker bus is expected to become a distinctive addition to Delhi’s tourism landscape in the months ahead.
