ElectoralRolls –  The Election Commission is preparing to release West Bengal’s revised electoral rolls following the Special Intensive Revision, a significant administrative step as the state moves toward the 2026 Assembly elections. –

West bengal electoral roll update 1

The updated voter lists will be made public on Saturday, officials confirmed, concluding months of verification, hearings, and administrative review. This marks the first statewide intensive revision of electoral rolls in West Bengal since 2002.

Comprehensive Review Ahead of Assembly Elections

The revision exercise was carried out to ensure accuracy in the voter database before the next Assembly polls. According to officials, all 7.08 crore names included in the draft rolls will feature in the newly updated list. Each entry has been categorized under one of three labels: approved, deleted, or under adjudication or consideration.

Authorities said the categorisation aims to bring greater transparency to the revision process while allowing voters to verify their status easily. The updated rolls will be accessible online through the Election Commission’s official website, the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal portal, and the ECI Net mobile application. Physical copies will also be available at district and sub-divisional offices, as well as at designated polling stations.

Decline in Electorate Numbers

When the draft rolls were first published on December 16, the electorate size showed a notable reduction. The total number of registered voters declined from 7.66 crore to 7.08 crore. More than 58 lakh names were removed during the verification process.

Officials explained that deletions occurred due to multiple factors, including reported deaths, migration to other regions, duplicate entries, and cases where voters could not be traced at their registered addresses. The Commission maintained that the objective of the exercise was to eliminate inaccuracies while safeguarding legitimate voter registrations.

Hearings and Discrepancy Checks

The second phase of the revision focused on hearings and scrutiny of cases flagged during the initial verification. Approximately 1.67 crore electors came under review in this stage. Of these, 1.36 crore were marked for what officials described as “logical discrepancies” in their records, while nearly 31 lakh entries lacked proper mapping to polling areas.

Election officials conducted hearings to assess objections and claims submitted by voters. The process involved document verification and cross-checking of records to determine whether entries should remain, be corrected, or be removed from the rolls.

Despite the extensive review, around 60 lakh voters are currently listed as being under adjudication. Their cases remain pending final decisions, and the Commission indicated that supplementary rolls would be issued in phases as these cases are resolved.

Political Attention and Administrative Significance

The statewide revision has drawn political interest, with parties closely monitoring the process. As the first Special Intensive Revision in more than two decades, the exercise has been seen as a critical administrative undertaking ahead of a high-stakes Assembly election.

Election authorities reiterated that the revision was conducted according to established guidelines and timelines. Officials also emphasized that voters whose names appear under adjudication still have opportunities to clarify their status through the prescribed channels.

How Voters Can Check Their Status

Citizens can verify their names in the revised rolls through multiple platforms. The lists will be uploaded on official portals, including eci.gov.in and ceowestbengal.wb.gov.in, and made available on the ECI Net app. In addition, printed copies will be displayed at polling booths and administrative offices to ensure wider accessibility, particularly for those without internet access.

The Election Commission stated that it will continue to monitor pending cases and release supplementary lists as required. With the publication of the updated electoral rolls, the administrative groundwork for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections moves into its next phase.
