The visit is considered an important step as the Election Commission moves closer to announcing the poll schedule for April and May.

Focus on Security and Administrative Readiness in Puducherry

Gyanesh Kumar is scheduled to reach Puducherry on Wednesday afternoon, where he will hold meetings with senior officials overseeing the Union Territory’s administration and law enforcement. Among those expected to attend the discussions are Chief Secretary Sharath Chauhan and Director General of Police Shalini Singh.

According to officials familiar with the arrangements, the review will concentrate on security deployment, logistics management and coordination among various departments involved in conducting the elections. Special attention is likely to be given to ensuring that polling stations are adequately staffed and that vulnerable locations receive appropriate monitoring.

Authorities are also preparing to implement the Model Code of Conduct once the election dates are formally declared. Ensuring compliance with election guidelines and preventing any violations will form a key part of the discussions.

Political Parties Briefed on Security Measures

Ahead of the Chief Election Commissioner’s arrival, the Puducherry Police convened a meeting with representatives of recognised political parties to outline the security framework for the elections. The session, held at the police headquarters, was chaired by Deputy Inspector General Sathya Sundaram and attended by senior officers.

During the meeting, officials explained the proposed law and order strategy, including surveillance of sensitive polling booths and measures to prevent disruptions. Deployment plans and coordination mechanisms were also discussed to reassure political stakeholders about transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

The interaction aimed to address concerns in advance and encourage cooperation among parties during the campaign period.

Interaction with Stakeholders Planned

In addition to reviewing administrative arrangements, Gyanesh Kumar is expected to meet representatives of recognised political parties in Puducherry. Such engagements typically provide the Election Commission with feedback from stakeholders regarding voter lists, polling infrastructure and security arrangements.

These consultations are part of the Commission’s broader effort to maintain neutrality and build confidence among voters and political participants alike.

Tamil Nadu Review to Follow

After concluding his engagements in Puducherry, the Chief Election Commissioner will travel to Tamil Nadu for further discussions on Thursday and Friday. He will be accompanied by seven Deputy Election Commissioners during the visit.

In Chennai, he is scheduled to meet Tamil Nadu’s Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik along with senior election officials to examine the state’s level of preparedness. The review will cover logistical planning, availability of polling personnel, electronic voting machine readiness and coordination with district administrations.

On the following day, meetings are planned with senior government officials and representatives of recognised political parties in the state. These interactions are expected to focus on maintaining law and order during campaigning and ensuring that the electoral process remains smooth and transparent.

Preparations Enter Final Phase

The Chief Election Commissioner’s visit comes soon after Deputy Election Commissioners completed preliminary assessments in Tamil Nadu last week. Those earlier inspections evaluated district-level preparations and infrastructure readiness.

With multiple states heading to the polls, the Commission’s leadership is working to ensure uniform standards of security and administrative efficiency across regions. The current round of reviews is widely viewed as a final assessment before the formal announcement of election dates.

As political activity intensifies in the run-up to the polls, the Election Commission’s consultations in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu signal the beginning of the final phase of preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections.
