Israel – The political debate in India has intensified ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Israel, with the Congress party accusing the central government of stepping back from its traditional support for Palestine.
Congress Raises Concerns Over Gaza Situation
On Tuesday, the Congress alleged that the government has effectively distanced itself from the Palestinian cause at a time when violence in Gaza continues. The party argued that the Prime Minister’s visit to Israel sends a conflicting message, given the ongoing civilian casualties reported in the region.
Congress general secretary in charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said the Centre’s public statements in favour of Palestine are not matched by its diplomatic posture. He maintained that India’s long-standing support for Palestinian statehood appears to have weakened under the present administration.
Allegations of Policy Shift
Ramesh pointed to reports of intensified displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank, stating that the developments have drawn international criticism. He also highlighted the continuing military operations in Gaza, describing the humanitarian situation as deeply concerning.
According to the Congress leader, India’s historical position on Palestine was rooted in early diplomatic recognition. He recalled that India was among the first nations to formally recognise the State of Palestine in 1988, a decision seen at the time as consistent with the country’s broader foreign policy principles.
Visit to Israel Amid Regional Tensions
Prime Minister Modi is expected to reach Israel on February 25 for a two-day trip. During his visit, he is likely to hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog. An address to the Israeli Parliament, known as the Knesset, is also part of the proposed itinerary.
The Congress questioned the timing of the visit, noting that tensions in the region remain high. Ramesh also referred to reports suggesting that Israel and the United States are considering further military action involving Iran, adding that the broader geopolitical climate should not be ignored.
Political Undercurrents in Israel
The Prime Minister’s upcoming address to the Knesset has reportedly become a matter of domestic debate within Israel as well. Sections of the Israeli opposition have expressed reservations, citing concerns over judicial reforms and political developments within their own country.
Ramesh remarked that Prime Minister Netanyahu is currently facing serious corruption charges, and argued that such factors should be taken into account when evaluating diplomatic engagements.
India’s Diplomatic Balancing Act
The controversy has once again brought attention to India’s delicate diplomatic balance between Israel and Palestine. Over the years, India has strengthened defence and technology ties with Israel, while continuing to voice support for a negotiated two-state solution.
Government officials have consistently maintained that India’s position remains unchanged, advocating dialogue and peaceful resolution. However, opposition leaders contend that recent diplomatic moves suggest a recalibration of priorities.
As Prime Minister Modi prepares for his visit, the political discourse in India is likely to remain focused on how the government navigates its relationships in a region marked by long-standing conflict and shifting alliances.
