Education – Himachal Expands Financial Aid for Widows’ Daughters

Education – The Himachal Pradesh government has broadened the scope of the Indira Gandhi Sukh Shiksha Yojna, allowing daughters of widows to receive financial support for higher education, whether they study within the state or outside it. The decision, announced on Friday, is aimed at strengthening access to professional courses for young women from vulnerable families.

Support Extended to Daughters up to 27 Years

The revised framework of the scheme now covers eligible daughters up to the age of 27 who wish to pursue higher studies. Earlier, assistance was primarily available for children up to 18 years, with provisions for educational expenses within government institutions in Himachal Pradesh. The updated policy ensures continued backing during crucial years of advanced learning.

The Indira Gandhi Sukh Shiksha Yojna was initially introduced to provide integrated assistance in education, health and nutrition to children of widows, destitute or divorced women, as well as those with disabled parents. With this expansion, the state government intends to address financial barriers that often prevent young women from completing professional degrees.

Monthly Allowance for Out-of-State Professional Courses

Under the amended provisions, beneficiaries enrolled in professional programmes at government institutions outside Himachal Pradesh will be eligible for financial assistance of Rs 3,000 per month for a maximum of 10 months. This support is meant to cover rent or paying guest accommodation in situations where hostel facilities are not available.

Officials said the move recognizes the growing number of students opting for specialized courses beyond the state’s borders and seeks to ease the additional financial burden faced by families.

Wide Range of Professional Courses Covered

The expanded benefits apply to a broad spectrum of professional disciplines. These include engineering and technology, business administration and management studies, medical and allied health sciences, law, computer applications, and information technology certifications. Education and humanities programmes are also included, along with courses under the State Council for Vocational Training.

In addition, programmes offered by the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology fall within the scheme’s coverage. By incorporating diverse academic streams, the government aims to ensure that students are not restricted in their career choices due to economic constraints.

Current Beneficiaries and Budget Allocation

At present, 504 girls between the ages of 18 and 27 are receiving assistance under the scheme. According to a government statement, around 20 percent of these beneficiaries are expected to enroll in professional courses following the recent expansion.

To meet the anticipated rise in demand, the state has earmarked an additional annual allocation of nearly Rs 1 crore. For the current financial year, Rs 31.01 crore has been set aside for the scheme. Of this amount, Rs 22.96 crore had been utilized as of February 3, reflecting steady implementation.

Previously, the scheme covered tuition fees, hostel expenses and related academic costs for students enrolled in government institutions within Himachal Pradesh. Monthly financial assistance was also provided to eligible children up to the age of 18.

Government Reaffirms Focus on Social Welfare

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu reiterated that the state government remains committed to uplifting vulnerable sections of society. He stated that the core objective of the scheme is to promote self-reliance by ensuring sustained financial and institutional support for young women seeking higher education.

Officials believe that extending benefits to daughters pursuing studies outside the state will enhance opportunities and contribute to long-term social and economic empowerment. The expansion is expected to encourage more students from disadvantaged backgrounds to enroll in professional programmes without financial uncertainty.
