Automotive – Qualcomm and Tata to Build Vehicle Modules in Assam

Automotive – Qualcomm Technologies and Tata Electronics have entered into a strategic partnership to produce Qualcomm Automotive Modules in India. The modules will be manufactured at Tata Electronics’ upcoming semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Assam, marking a significant step in expanding the country’s role in the global automotive technology supply chain.

Partnership Strengthens Local Manufacturing Push

The collaboration aligns with India’s broader push to boost domestic electronics production under the Make in India programme. By manufacturing automotive modules locally, the two companies aim to support rising demand from both Indian and international vehicle manufacturers.

The modules are designed for next-generation automotive applications, including digital cockpit systems, infotainment platforms, vehicle connectivity solutions, and intelligent driver-assistance technologies. Local production is expected to improve supply chain flexibility and reduce reliance on imports, while offering manufacturers better access to critical components.

According to a joint statement, Tata Electronics will become part of Qualcomm Technologies’ global network of manufacturing partners. This network supports the increasing demand for modular automotive platforms as carmakers move toward more integrated and software-driven vehicle systems.

What Qualcomm Automotive Modules Offer

Qualcomm Automotive Modules combine Snapdragon Digital Chassis system-on-chips with essential hardware components into ready-to-deploy units. These integrated modules provide automakers with comprehensive electronic platforms that simplify system design and speed up product development.

Industry experts note that modular architectures are gaining traction as vehicles become more software-defined. By integrating multiple functions into compact, production-ready modules, manufacturers can shorten development cycles and scale production more efficiently.

Nakul Duggal, who leads automotive, industrial and embedded IoT initiatives at Qualcomm Technologies, said expanding manufacturing capabilities in strategic regions is critical as the industry transitions to module-based vehicle designs. Establishing production in India is expected to strengthen the company’s ability to serve original equipment manufacturers across markets with improved resilience and operational flexibility.

Investment in India’s First Indigenous OSAT Facility

The modules will be produced at Tata Electronics’ greenfield semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad. The project, with an investment of approximately $3 billion, is being positioned as India’s first indigenous OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) facility.

The high-volume plant will focus on advanced packaging and assembly technologies such as wire bond, flip chip, and integrated systems packaging. These technologies are essential for manufacturing semiconductor products used across multiple sectors, including automotive, communications, Internet of Things applications, and artificial intelligence.

The establishment of the Jagiroad facility is seen as a milestone in India’s semiconductor ambitions. It aims to strengthen domestic capabilities in chip assembly and testing at a time when global supply chains are undergoing diversification.

Addressing Global Demand and Supply Chain Resilience

The move comes amid steady growth in demand for advanced automotive electronics worldwide. As vehicles incorporate more digital features and connected services, automakers require reliable access to high-performance semiconductor components.

By producing Qualcomm Automotive Modules in India, the partnership is expected to contribute to geographic diversification of manufacturing. This approach can help mitigate supply chain disruptions and create new opportunities for Indian manufacturing within the global semiconductor ecosystem.

For Tata Electronics, the collaboration represents an expansion into high-value automotive semiconductor solutions. For Qualcomm Technologies, it provides an additional production base to support both domestic and international customers.
