Politics – Silent Protest Held in Dharwad Over Kulkarni Verdict
Politics – Hundreds of supporters of Congress leader and MLA Vinay Kulkarni gathered in Dharwad on Saturday, staging a शांत and orderly protest march following his recent life imprisonment verdict. Participants described the conviction as politically motivated and voiced concern over what they believe is an unjust outcome in a long-running case.

Protest March Draws Large Crowd
The demonstration began around noon from Kala Bhavan, where supporters assembled in significant numbers well before the march commenced. Many attendees wore black clothing and armbands, symbolizing dissent and solidarity. The procession moved through key areas of the city and concluded near KCC Bank, maintaining a disciplined and silent format throughout.
Organisers said the intention behind the march was to highlight their belief that Kulkarni had been unfairly implicated. They maintained that the case reflects deeper political tensions and called for a fair reassessment of the evidence and proceedings.
Supporters Raise Concerns Over Alleged Bias
Participants in the march consistently echoed concerns about alleged political interference. According to those involved, Kulkarni has been made a scapegoat in a case that has drawn national attention. The turnout reflected strong backing from party workers and local residents who continue to support him despite the court’s ruling.
The protest remained peaceful, with no reports of disruption, and was closely monitored by local authorities to ensure public safety.
Background of the 2016 Murder Case
The case dates back to June 15, 2016, when BJP leader Yogesh Gowda was attacked and killed by a group of assailants at a gym in Dharwad. The incident shocked the region and quickly escalated into a major political controversy. Gowda had reportedly been a political rival, adding a layer of complexity to the investigation.
A special court in Bengaluru recently sentenced Kulkarni along with 16 others to life imprisonment. Each of the convicted individuals was also fined Rs 30,000. The charges included criminal conspiracy and murder, based on findings presented during the trial.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Initially investigated by state authorities, the case was later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). At the time the allegations surfaced, Kulkarni held a ministerial position and was also the district in-charge minister, making the case particularly sensitive.
Kulkarni was named as one of the accused during the investigation. He was arrested in 2020 and granted bail the following year. However, the CBI later sought cancellation of his bail, alleging that he had attempted to influence witnesses. The court accepted this argument and revoked his bail, leading to his re-arrest.
Ongoing Developments and Political Reactions
Following the cancellation of his bail, Kulkarni surrendered before authorities. He has since been released on bail again while continuing to hold the position of Chairman of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board.
The verdict and subsequent developments have triggered political debate, with supporters continuing to question the fairness of the legal process. Meanwhile, authorities maintain that the conviction was based on evidence examined during the trial.
As the case continues to attract attention, both legal and political circles are closely watching any further appeals or proceedings that may follow.
