Traffic Enforcement – Authorities in the national capital have intensified action against motorists flouting traffic direction norms-
Delhi’s traffic authorities have registered 182 cases against motorists for driving against the designated flow of traffic between January 3 and February 9, underscoring growing concerns over road safety in the city.
Sharp Rise in Wrong-Side Driving Cases
Data released by the Delhi Traffic Police reveals that, on average, nearly five cases were filed each day during the period. Officials noted that the New Delhi Range recorded the highest number of violations, with 53 cases. The Southern Range followed with 37 cases, while the Central, Northern and Western Ranges each reported 27 cases. The Eastern Range accounted for 11 cases during the same timeframe.
The figures indicate that driving on the wrong side of the road remains a persistent issue across multiple parts of the capital, despite repeated advisories and enforcement drives.
Legal Provisions and Penalties
According to police officials, offenders have been booked under Section 281, which pertains to rash driving under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. The offence carries a penalty of up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of Rs 1,000, or both, depending on the severity of the violation.
An officer familiar with the enforcement campaign said that wrong-side driving is no longer being treated as a routine traffic breach. Instead, authorities are categorising it as a serious violation with potentially fatal consequences.
Safety Risks Highlighted by Officials
Police have stressed that driving against traffic flow significantly increases the likelihood of head-on collisions. Such crashes, particularly at high speeds, often leave little chance of survival and can result in severe injuries to motorists, pedestrians and bystanders.
Officials pointed out that violations such as jumping traffic lights, overspeeding and ignoring lane discipline compound the risks. When a vehicle suddenly appears from the wrong direction, other road users have minimal time to react, creating dangerous situations at intersections, flyovers and busy arterial roads.
Surveillance and Monitoring Intensified
To address the issue, authorities have expanded surveillance measures across key stretches of the city. The enforcement drive includes monitoring through CCTV cameras and AI-enabled high-resolution systems capable of identifying traffic violations in real time.
Traffic personnel have also been deployed at major junctions and vulnerable points, while patrolling has been stepped up in areas where repeated violations have been observed. Electronic surveillance is being used alongside physical checks to detect offenders more efficiently.
Officials confirmed that once violations are recorded, prompt legal action is initiated. In serious cases, vehicles are being impounded, and recommendations are being made for the suspension of driving licences.
Appeal for Responsible Driving
Police have urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic rules and maintain lane discipline. They have reiterated that overspeeding and distracted driving can prove deadly, especially in congested urban conditions.
Authorities also cautioned drivers against using mobile phones while driving, including recording videos or engaging with social media. Even a brief distraction, they warned, can lead to irreversible consequences on the road.
The ongoing crackdown signals a broader effort by Delhi Police to curb dangerous driving practices and reduce the number of fatal road accidents in the capital. Officials maintain that sustained enforcement, combined with public awareness, is essential to improving overall traffic safety in the city.
