DelhiAttack – Young Man Hospitalised After Intervening in Mehrauli Harassment Case
DelhiAttack – A family in south Delhi is struggling to cope after a 26-year-old man suffered critical head injuries while attempting to stop a group of men from harassing women in a public place. The assault, which occurred in the Mehrauli area in the early hours of February 3, has left the victim undergoing intensive treatment and has raised fresh concerns about public safety and bystander intervention.
The injured man, Mukesh, is currently admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where doctors are monitoring his condition. His mother, Sarvesh, said the family is deeply shaken by the violence. Speaking from the hospital, she questioned how stepping in to help others could result in such severe consequences, adding that the incident has left them emotionally devastated.
Incident occurred during early morning hours
According to police officials, the attack took place around 5 am when Mukesh stopped at a roadside tea stall while returning home from his maternal uncle’s wedding. Mukesh, a resident of Sangam Vihar, noticed two or three women being allegedly harassed by a group of men nearby.
Witness accounts and Mukesh’s own statement indicate that he approached the group and asked them to stop their behaviour. He later told investigators that his words were limited to requesting them not to trouble the women and that he did not provoke them in any other way.
Brutal assault followed intervention
What began as a verbal objection quickly escalated into violence. Mukesh alleged that one of the men struck him on the head with a heavy object resembling a stone, causing him to lose consciousness. Even after he collapsed, the attackers allegedly continued the assault, hitting and kicking him repeatedly as he lay on the ground.
Police sources said the attack might have continued further had a passerby not intervened. Mukesh recalled that a man from the crowd stepped in and pushed the attackers away, preventing more serious harm. He later expressed gratitude, stating that the intervention may have saved his life.
Help from bystanders and quick police response
The women Mukesh tried to protect reportedly stayed at the scene and immediately contacted the Police Control Room. Emergency services were alerted, and Mukesh was rushed to hospital for urgent medical care. Doctors later confirmed that he had sustained serious head injuries and required specialised trauma treatment.
Family members said the timely response of both civilians and emergency services played a crucial role in stabilising his condition. However, they also emphasised that the incident has left lasting psychological trauma for Mukesh and those close to him.
Video evidence emerges online
A video of the assault surfaced on social media later that day, showing four men attacking Mukesh near a street lamp. The footage captures the attackers dragging him by his shirt, repeatedly striking him, and shouting abuses. Police officials confirmed they are using the video as part of their investigation to identify and track down those involved.
Authorities stated that a case has been registered and that efforts are underway to apprehend the suspects. They also reiterated appeals to the public to report harassment or violence promptly and to avoid taking unnecessary risks when intervening alone.
