“I grew up adoring the late Om Puri sahab, one of India’s greatest acting giants. He was a true trailblazer who went against the definition of what it meant to be a hero. Abhishek said IANS, “One great thing that people take away from his filmography is that he always did roles and films, never evaluated them based on the size of the role.”

In the series, which is based on the division of India and Pakistan as well as the religious and sociopolitical dynamics of the time, Abhishek plays a rioter motivated by retaliation after losing his pregnant wife to communal violence. This journey eventually leads him to surrender before Mahatma Gandhi.

Om Puri also played the role in Richard Attenborough’s 1982 film “Gandhi,” which starred Ben Kingsley.

“I wanted to make sure I showed up when Nikkhil asked me to make this cameo. That, in my opinion, is the real essence of our sector. The role is a tribute to Gandhi’s Om Puri Sahab, and I felt really honored to have been given the chance to play this part.

According to Abishek, he is “no comparison” to Om Puri’s artistry and legacy.

He is and will be a true movie star. However, it is a true honor for me to follow in his footsteps, even for this little cameo part. I want to constantly keep in mind that roles aren’t always about scale; sometimes the tiniest details have the most effect, and that’s exactly what the reviews have been since Freedom at Midnight 2 came out. “I’ve been receiving a lot of calls, messages, and social media tags expressing gratitude for the cameo,” Abhishek said.

The turmoil of intercommunal violence, the refugee crisis, the merging of princely states, and the political difficulties among leaders are all captured in the show’s second season, which explores the anarchy that followed Partition.

Om Puri passed away in 2017 at the age of 66 after suffering a heart attack. In the “In Memoriam” section of the 89th Academy Awards, he received recognition for his contributions to global film.
