As commander-in-chief of the armed forces, President Lai promised to defend the nation and the lives and property of every person, according to the statement.President Lai said, “I will undoubtedly protect the country and will not permit Chinese pressure or its hand to enter Taiwan.”
Additionally, he said on Thursday that China’s “cross-border pressure” on Taiwanese citizens demonstrates that Taiwan is not a part of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and that Beijing’s power does not extend to Taiwan.
According to Focus Taiwan, Lai referenced the recent visit to Taiwan by Japanese politician Hei Seki, who was born in China and is prohibited from visiting the PRC due to Chinese sanctions, as evidence that the PRC and the Republic of China (ROC), Taiwan’s official name, are not subservient to one another.
