Infrastructure – A sanitation worker lost his life during a sewer cleaning operation in Noida, leading the Noida Authority to announce strict action against the contractor responsible for the work and disciplinary measures against officials linked to the project. The incident has once again drawn attention to the importance of workplace safety during hazardous maintenance operations involving underground sewer systems.
Fatal Incident During Sewer Maintenance
The accident took place on Tuesday near the T-point connecting Sector 93B and Gejha Village, an area that falls under Water Division III of the Noida Authority. Officials said a deep sewer line was undergoing cleaning when the worker entered a manhole to remove an obstruction that had affected the drainage system.
The deceased was identified as Shiva, who had been assigned to clear the blockage inside the sewer. According to the Authority, he had entered the manhole wearing protective equipment, including an oxygen mask, a safety belt and other safety gear required for such operations. However, the task took a tragic turn when he became trapped inside the chamber.
Rescue Efforts Failed to Save the Worker
Officials stated that field staff attempted to pull Shiva out after noticing that he had remained inside the manhole for an extended period. During the rescue effort, they discovered that he had become entangled in wires present inside the sewer line, making it difficult to extract him quickly.
Emergency assistance was immediately sought, and teams from the local police and the fire department joined the rescue operation. After he was brought out of the manhole, Shiva was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Despite the emergency response, doctors declared him dead while he was receiving treatment.
Contractor Faces Criminal Proceedings
The sewer cleaning work had been assigned to Shivji Constructions Co., a contractor engaged by the Noida Authority. Following the incident, the Authority said it had initiated the process of filing a criminal case against the company.
In addition, officials confirmed that the contractor would receive a notice proposing its blacklisting, signalling that the agency intends to take firm action over the fatal accident. The Authority said accountability would be fixed after examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Disciplinary Action Against Officials
Along with action against the contractor, the Noida Authority also announced departmental proceedings against officials connected with the project. The contractual Junior Engineer, Rakesh Kumar, will have his services terminated.
The Authority further stated that an adverse entry will be recorded in the service record of the concerned Manager, while the Senior Manager has been issued a show-cause notice seeking an explanation regarding the incident. These measures are part of the Authority’s response to identify any lapses in supervision or compliance with safety procedures.
Assistance for the Family
Authorities have assured that all eligible support and assistance permitted under existing rules will be extended to the family of the deceased without unnecessary delay. Officials said the process of providing relief would be carried out in accordance with applicable regulations.
Meanwhile, Emergency Medical Officer Dr. Sanchit Sharma at the district hospital confirmed that Shiva, a resident of Sector 44, was brought to the hospital from the Gejha area at 8:55 pm. Hospital staff were informed that he had been recovered from a sewer line. After conducting a medical examination, doctors officially declared him dead.
The incident has highlighted the risks associated with sewer maintenance work and underscores the need for strict adherence to safety standards to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
