Inflation – Akhilesh Yadav Raises Concerns Over Rising Prices and Economic Challenges
Inflation – Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has criticized the BJP-led Central government over increasing inflation, the weakening value of the rupee, and the potential economic consequences of the ongoing tensions in West Asia. He questioned the government’s handling of economic issues and warned that continued price rises could place additional pressure on ordinary citizens.

Questions Raised Over Inflation and Currency Decline
Speaking to reporters, Yadav expressed doubts about the accuracy of official economic data and pointed to the growing cost of everyday necessities. He noted that even common items have become more expensive, highlighting the burden faced by households due to rising living expenses. According to him, increasing fuel prices and persistent inflation could create significant challenges for the country’s economic stability in the coming years.
The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister also stated that the country’s major political challenge remains the BJP and argued that meaningful solutions would require a change in leadership at the Centre.
Remarks on India’s Foreign Policy Approach
Yadav also commented on the Ministry of External Affairs summoning U.S. Charge d’Affaires Jason Meeks following concerns over attacks involving commercial vessels. While acknowledging that diplomatic decisions are taken by the government, he questioned the effectiveness of India’s current foreign policy strategy.
According to Yadav, the move appeared largely symbolic and reflected broader concerns regarding India’s ability to influence major global powers. He further suggested that several policy adjustments made in relation to the United States had not necessarily produced favorable outcomes for India.
Sailors Killed in Gulf of Oman Incident
The political remarks came after the deaths of three Indian sailors in a U.S. military operation involving a commercial tanker in the Gulf of Oman. The vessel, MT Settebello, was reportedly targeted after American authorities alleged that it had violated restrictions connected to Iranian ports.
The tanker carried 24 Indian crew members. Rescue efforts succeeded in saving 21 sailors, while three were later confirmed dead. The incident has sparked discussions about maritime security and the safety of Indian citizens working in international shipping routes.
Retail Inflation Moves Higher in May
Meanwhile, fresh figures released by the National Statistics Office showed that India’s retail inflation increased to 3.93 percent in May 2026, compared with 3.48 percent in April. The data, issued by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, indicated a moderate rise in consumer prices across various sectors.
Inflation in rural areas was recorded at 4.25 percent, while urban regions reported a lower rate of 3.53 percent. The figures suggest that price pressures remain more pronounced in rural parts of the country.
Food Prices Continue to Add Pressure
Food inflation also registered an increase during May. The Consumer Food Price Index rose to 4.78 percent on an annual basis. Rural food inflation stood at 4.85 percent, slightly above the urban figure of 4.66 percent.
Among expenditure categories, food and beverages recorded inflation of 4.55 percent. Restaurants and accommodation services witnessed a rise of 5.75 percent. The sharpest increase was seen in personal care, social protection, and miscellaneous services, where inflation reached 18.46 percent.
Sharp Price Changes in Select Commodities
Housing inflation remained relatively moderate at 2.12 percent during the month. At the product level, silver jewellery registered the highest annual increase at 155.23 percent. Significant price rises were also reported in tomatoes, precious jewellery items, and ginger.
In contrast, some products became cheaper. Potato prices recorded a notable decline, while peas and certain automobile categories also witnessed year-on-year reductions.
States Recording Higher Inflation Levels
Among states with populations exceeding 50 lakh, Telangana reported the highest retail inflation rate in May at 6.15 percent. Tamil Nadu followed at 5.11 percent, while Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Odisha also recorded inflation levels above the national average.
The latest data highlights the continuing challenge of managing inflation while maintaining economic growth, a debate that is likely to remain central in India’s political and economic discussions in the months ahead.
