AkhileshYadav – Akhilesh Yadav Questions Quality of Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Project

AkhileshYadav – Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has accused the Uttar Pradesh government of serious irregularities in the construction of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway, alleging that parts of the newly built corridor suffered damage even before its formal inauguration. Raising concerns over the quality of public infrastructure, Yadav claimed that the ₹4,700-crore project reflects larger issues related to accountability and execution in major government-funded developments.

Allegations Over Construction Standards

In a post shared on X, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister criticized what he described as poor construction practices and linked the issue to infrastructure projects in other BJP-ruled states. Referring to Maharashtra’s ₹6,700-crore “Missing Link” project, he questioned whether there was an ongoing pattern of mismanagement and corruption in high-value public works.

Yadav argued that expressways are designed to provide motorists with safe and efficient travel rather than creating uncertainty about road conditions. He alleged that the reported damage to the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway before its inauguration raised serious questions about the quality of construction and oversight during project implementation.

Entry and Exit Design Also Under Scrutiny

Apart from concerns related to structural quality, the Samajwadi Party leader also highlighted what he described as flaws in the expressway’s design. According to him, traffic congestion at entry and exit points could significantly reduce the benefits of faster travel on the main carriageway.

He claimed that commuters might spend more time entering city limits from the expressway than travelling between Lucknow and Kanpur themselves. Yadav further questioned whether the project had been planned primarily for public convenience or to benefit contractors associated with the ruling establishment.

Safety Concerns Raised for Future Commuters

Yadav also expressed concern about the safety of commuters, stating that infrastructure projects should never compromise on construction quality. He argued that if travellers lose confidence in the reliability of a newly built expressway, the intended reduction in travel time would have little practical value.

According to him, faster transportation is meaningful only when roads are built to high engineering standards and can ensure the safety of daily commuters. He called for greater accountability from agencies responsible for executing and supervising such large-scale infrastructure projects.

Inauguration Scheduled Alongside Other Highway Projects

The criticism comes shortly before the planned inauguration of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway along with three additional National Highway projects valued at more than ₹4,850 crore. These projects are expected to strengthen road connectivity across Uttar Pradesh and improve transport infrastructure in the region.

The Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway has been positioned as one of the state’s important transport initiatives, aimed at reducing travel time between two of Uttar Pradesh’s largest urban centres while supporting commercial movement and regional economic growth.

NHAI Highlights Expected Benefits

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has maintained that the expressway is designed to offer smoother, safer and faster travel between Lucknow and Kanpur. According to the authority, the project will improve connectivity not only within Uttar Pradesh but also with neighbouring states.

The new corridor is expected to provide improved access to Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi through the Jhansi and Agra routes. It will also strengthen links towards Bihar and Nepal through the Prayagraj-Varanasi corridor.

NHAI further stated that travellers using the expressway will benefit from quicker access to Lucknow Airport and Shaheed Path, one of the city’s key arterial roads. Officials believe the project will help reduce congestion on existing highways, improve commuting efficiency and support the movement of passengers as well as commercial traffic across the region.
