WorldCup2026 – Norway Secure Knockout Spot After Haaland’s Match-Winning Display

WorldCup2026 – Norway booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after edging Senegal 3-2 in a closely contested Group I encounter at New Jersey Stadium on Tuesday. The European side secured qualification with a game still left to play in the group phase, thanks largely to another standout performance from striker Erling Haaland.

Norway round of 32 haaland double win

Norway Capitalise on Late First-Half Momentum

For much of the opening period, both teams struggled to create meaningful opportunities as defensive discipline dominated proceedings. However, Norway gradually gained control toward the end of the first half and eventually found the breakthrough in the 43rd minute.

A costly defensive mistake by Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly allowed Marcus Holmgren Pedersen to seize possession in a dangerous area. The Norwegian defender reacted quickly and drove the ball into the net to hand his side a valuable lead before halftime.

Haaland Extends Remarkable Scoring Run

Norway returned from the break with renewed confidence and doubled their advantage within three minutes of the restart. Midfielder Martin Odegaard delivered a precise through ball that found Haaland in space, and the striker calmly finished past the goalkeeper.

The goal continued Haaland’s impressive run in international football, marking a score in each of his last 12 competitive appearances for Norway. It also strengthened his position among the tournament’s leading scorers.

Senegal Fight Back but Norway Respond

Senegal refused to back down and reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute through Ismaila Sarr. The forward capitalised on a quick attacking move and finished confidently to bring his team back into the contest.

The response from Norway was immediate. Just five minutes later, Haaland restored the two-goal cushion by converting from close range after sustained pressure inside the Senegal penalty area. His second goal of the match underlined his growing influence at the tournament and took his tally to four goals in the group stage.

Historic Achievement for Norwegian Striker

Haaland’s latest performance placed him in distinguished company. He became the first player since Harry Kane at the 2018 World Cup to score multiple goals across his opening two matches of a tournament. Overall, he is only the sixth player to achieve that feat.

The Norwegian forward has now amassed an extraordinary scoring record for his national team, reaching 59 international goals in just 52 appearances. His form has also intensified the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot, where he remains among the leading contenders alongside some of football’s biggest names.

Senegal’s Qualification Hopes Remain Alive

Despite falling short, Senegal showed resilience throughout the contest and nearly staged a dramatic comeback. Deep into stoppage time, Sarr struck again to make it 3-2 and set up a tense finish.

Norway, however, managed to withstand the late pressure and held on for a crucial victory. The result guarantees their progression to the knockout rounds and strengthens confidence within the squad ahead of their final group fixture.

Senegal remain without a point in Group I, but their chances of advancing have not completely disappeared. A victory against Iraq in their final group-stage match could still leave them in contention for one of the tournament’s best third-placed qualification spots
