Women’sT20WorldCup – West Indies Hold Nerve to Defeat Scotland in Close Contest
Women’sT20WorldCup – West Indies secured a hard-fought seven-run victory over Scotland in a closely fought Group B encounter of the Women’s T20 World Cup at Headingley on Friday. A late batting surge from Stafanie Taylor helped the Caribbean side post a competitive total before their bowlers successfully defended it against a determined Scottish chase.

Taylor’s Late Assault Rescues West Indies Innings
After being asked to bat first, West Indies found it difficult to build momentum despite batting on a surface that offered good scoring opportunities. Scotland’s disciplined bowling attack restricted boundaries and maintained pressure throughout the early stages of the innings. The West Indies managed only 33 runs for the loss of one wicket during the powerplay.
Scotland’s bowlers maintained their control as wickets fell at regular intervals. Katherine Fraser led the effort with an impressive spell, while also contributing with a run-out and an outstanding boundary catch. West Indies captain Hayley Matthews struggled for fluency and was dismissed after scoring 14 runs from 22 deliveries. By the halfway stage, the former champions were placed at 59 for 2 and searching for stability.
Campbelle Provides Stability Amid Middle-Order Trouble
Shemaine Campbelle played a crucial role in rebuilding the innings as Scotland continued to apply pressure. The Caribbean side suffered further setbacks, including the dismissal of Chinelle Henry, leaving them in a difficult position at 85 for 5 in the 15th over.
Campbelle contributed a valuable 36 runs from 26 balls and shared an important partnership with Deandra Dottin, who was appearing in her 150th T20 International. Their stand helped prevent a deeper collapse and laid the foundation for a late charge.
Strong Finish Pushes Total Beyond 150
The momentum shifted dramatically during the closing overs. Stafanie Taylor took control of the innings with an aggressive unbeaten knock, finding gaps and clearing the infield with confidence. West Indies collected 29 runs from the final two overs, transforming what looked like a below-par total into a challenging target.
Taylor remained unbeaten on 47 from just 19 deliveries, guiding her side to 153 for 6 after 20 overs and giving the bowlers something substantial to defend.
Scotland Begin Chase in Dominant Fashion
Scotland responded positively and raced out of the blocks through Darcey Carter and Katherine Fraser. The pair added a brisk fifty-run partnership within the first five overs, putting the West Indies under pressure and raising hopes of a successful chase.
However, Hayley Matthews produced a decisive spell that altered the direction of the match. She dismissed Fraser and then removed Scotland captain Kathryn Bryce just two deliveries later. Those breakthroughs sparked a dramatic collapse as Scotland slipped from 51 without loss to 55 for 4 in a matter of minutes.
Carter’s Resistance Falls Short
Despite the setback, Darcey Carter continued to fight. Battling through discomfort caused by a calf injury, she anchored the innings with a determined 59 from 62 balls and completed a deserved half-century. Alongside Ailsa Lister, she stitched together a valuable partnership that kept Scotland within reach of the target.
As the match entered its final stages, Scotland still had an outside chance. However, Aaliyah Alleyne delivered a match-defining penultimate over, removing Carter, Lister and Kirstie Gordon to effectively end the challenge. Lister’s late contribution of 33 runs added excitement, but the required rate proved too much.
West Indies eventually restricted Scotland to 146 for 9 from their 20 overs, sealing their second victory of the tournament and strengthening their position in Group B.
