IPL Playoffs – Race for Final Qualification Spot Intensifies Before League Stage Ends
IPL Playoffs – The race to secure a place in the Indian Premier League 2026 playoffs has entered a crucial phase with only one qualification berth still undecided. While Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad have already confirmed their entry into the final four, several teams remain in contention for the remaining position as the tournament heads toward the final week of league fixtures.

RCB Maintain Strong Position for Top-Two Finish
Royal Challengers Bengaluru became the first side to seal playoff qualification after defeating Punjab Kings in Dharamsala earlier this week. Their impressive net run rate and consistent performances throughout the season have placed them in a commanding situation ahead of their final league match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
RCB can still secure a top-two finish even if they lose their final game, depending on the result between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans. A victory over Hyderabad would guarantee Bengaluru the top position in the standings with 20 points. Their healthy net run rate also gives them a significant advantage over other competing sides.
Gujarat Titans and SRH Eye Valuable Top-Two Advantage
Gujarat Titans officially confirmed their playoff berth after Hyderabad registered a win over Chennai Super Kings in Chennai. Titans now need a victory in their final fixture and favorable results elsewhere to move into the top two positions.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, meanwhile, have emerged as serious contenders for a top-two finish following their strong performance against CSK. If Hyderabad defeat RCB in their remaining game and Gujarat fail to win, SRH could finish second on the points table. In case both teams end level on points, qualification positions will be determined through net run rate.
Finishing inside the top two remains important because it provides teams with an additional opportunity to reach the IPL final through Qualifier 1.
Punjab Kings Still in Contention Despite Recent Setback
Punjab Kings remain mathematically alive in the playoff race even after their defeat to RCB. Their qualification hopes now depend on winning against Lucknow Super Giants and relying on other teams to drop points in the final round of matches.
Punjab can still reach a maximum of 15 points. For that to happen, Rajasthan Royals must suffer at least one defeat, while Kolkata Knight Riders also need to stay behind Punjab either on points or net run rate. Several combinations involving Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals could also influence Punjab’s chances.
Rajasthan Royals Hold Advantage in Qualification Battle
Among the teams still fighting for the fourth playoff spot, Rajasthan Royals appear to be in the strongest position. They are scheduled to face already-eliminated Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians in their remaining league matches.
If Rajasthan win both games, they will move to 16 points and likely secure qualification without depending on other results. Even with 14 points, Royals could still advance provided rival teams fail to capitalize on their remaining fixtures.
Their recent form and relatively favorable schedule have placed them slightly ahead of other contenders in the race for the final playoff place.
CSK, DC and KKR Face Tough Qualification Scenarios
Chennai Super Kings suffered a damaging defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad, leaving their campaign under pressure. CSK currently sit on 12 points and must defeat Gujarat Titans in their last game to stay in contention. Even then, qualification may depend on net run rate comparisons with competing teams.
Delhi Capitals face an even steeper challenge because of their significantly poor net run rate. They require a victory over Kolkata Knight Riders along with multiple favorable results involving Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings to have any realistic chance of progressing.
Kolkata Knight Riders are also still mathematically alive. With two matches remaining, KKR could reach 15 points if other results align in their favor. Their qualification hopes depend heavily on defeats for Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings in the closing stages of the league phase.
Final Week Promises High Drama
With seven league matches still left in IPL 2026, the competition for the final playoff position remains wide open. At the same time, the fight for a top-two finish among already-qualified teams is expected to add further excitement before the knockout stage begins.
The coming days are likely to decide not only which team claims the final playoff berth, but also which sides gain the crucial advantage of an extra opportunity in the road to the IPL final.
