HardikPandya – Complaint Filed Over Alleged National Flag Disrespect in World Cup Celebrations
HardikPandya – A formal complaint has been submitted to police in Bengaluru against Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya following allegations that the national flag was handled inappropriately during celebrations after India’s T20 World Cup victory. The complaint relates to events that reportedly took place during the team’s on-field celebrations at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad after India secured the championship.

Lawyer Submits Complaint at Bengaluru Police Station
The complaint was filed at the Shivaji Nagar Police Station by Pune-based advocate Wajed Khan Bidkar. According to officials, the lawyer submitted a written application requesting that authorities examine the matter and take suitable action if any violation of rules concerning the national flag is found.
Bidkar argued that the national flag represents the dignity of the entire country and must always be treated with respect. While speaking about the complaint, he said he approached the Bengaluru police station even though the incident reportedly occurred in another city, emphasizing that the national flag is a symbol of the nation and concerns related to it can be raised anywhere in India.
Police officials acknowledged receiving the complaint and provided the complainant with a copy of the submission. Authorities have not yet announced whether a formal investigation will be launched.
Viral Celebration Videos Spark Allegations
The complaint references several videos circulating widely on social media that show members of the Indian cricket team celebrating their victory on the field. In one widely shared clip, Pandya can be seen celebrating enthusiastically with the Indian tricolour draped over his shoulders while running and dancing with teammates during the post-match celebrations.
According to the complainant, another moment in the video appears to show the cricketer lying down on the stage while the flag remained wrapped around him. Bidkar alleges that this behavior could be interpreted as disrespectful toward the national flag.
He cited provisions of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, which outlines how the national flag must be treated with dignity and prohibits actions that could be viewed as disrespectful.
Complainant Cites Flag Respect Law
Speaking to reporters, Bidkar explained his reasoning for filing the complaint. He said the law clearly states that the national flag must always be treated with respect and should not be used in a manner that undermines its dignity.
He added that the celebrations appeared to cross that boundary and therefore deserved legal attention. According to him, the complaint was submitted so that authorities can examine whether the conduct shown in the videos violates the provisions of the law.
Bidkar also mentioned that when he initially approached the police station, he was informed that the incident occurred in Ahmedabad. However, he argued that since the issue concerns the national symbol of the entire country, the complaint should still be accepted.
Police Yet to Comment on Next Steps
As of now, the police have not issued an official statement regarding possible legal action. Sources indicate that the complaint will be reviewed and authorities may determine whether it falls under the jurisdiction of the local police or needs to be forwarded to the appropriate authorities in Gujarat.
No response from Pandya or representatives of the Indian cricket team has been reported regarding the allegations.
India’s Historic T20 World Cup Victory
The controversy emerged shortly after India celebrated a significant sporting milestone. The Indian men’s cricket team defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the T20 World Cup final on Sunday, successfully defending their title.
The victory marked several historic achievements for the team. India became the first country to win the T20 World Cup on home soil and the first side to successfully defend the title after lifting the trophy in 2024. It also secured India’s third T20 World Cup triumph, following earlier victories in 2007, 2024, and now 2026.
The team’s celebrations following the win drew widespread attention across social media and news platforms, with millions of fans sharing clips and images from the stadium. However, the same celebrations have now become the subject of a legal complaint that authorities may review in the coming days.
