CricketWorldCup – Australia Make Surprise Bowling Change for Women’s T20 Event

CricketWorldCup – Australia has announced a largely experienced squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England, but one major selection decision has drawn attention after fast bowler Darcie Brown was left out of the final group.

Australia womens t20 squad shock selection

Brown, who has represented Australia in the last two editions of the tournament, misses out despite claiming 34 wickets in 41 T20 internationals. The pace bowler has been a regular part of Australia’s white-ball plans in recent years, making her exclusion one of the biggest talking points following the squad reveal.

Young Left-Arm Pacer Earns Unexpected Selection

Selectors instead handed an opportunity to emerging left-arm quick Lucy Hamilton, who has played only one T20 international so far and has limited overall international experience. Despite her short career at the senior level, the management appears confident in her potential ahead of the global tournament.

Hamilton captained Australia during the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup last year and has gradually moved into the senior setup since March. She featured during Australia’s tour of the West Indies and also took part in the recent home series against India across formats.

Team officials believe her variation and left-arm angle could add balance to the bowling unit in English conditions.

Sophie Molineux Set to Lead Australia

Left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux has been named captain for the tournament despite concerns earlier this year regarding her fitness. Her return strengthens Australia’s leadership group as the side aims to secure another major ICC title.

Australia will once again rely on a core group of highly experienced players, including Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney, Ash Gardner, Tahlia McGrath and Megan Schutt. The squad combines tournament experience with several younger players who have impressed in domestic and franchise cricket.

Perry, one of the most accomplished cricketers in the women’s game, is close to another significant career milestone. If selected throughout the competition, she could become the first player to appear in 50 Women’s T20 World Cup matches.

Emerging Players Add Fresh Energy to Squad

Among the younger names, Phoebe Litchfield returns after featuring in the previous edition of the tournament, while Georgia Voll has earned her maiden World Cup selection following a breakthrough season.

Voll has attracted attention with aggressive batting performances, scoring 474 runs in just 12 innings at a strike rate above 156. Her campaign included one century and three half-centuries, and she also played an important role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru winning their second Women’s Premier League title earlier this year.

Australia have also recalled Nicola Carey, who was part of the country’s victorious 2020 T20 World Cup squad. Carey recently returned to Australia’s T20I side and impressed during the Women’s Premier League with Mumbai Indians, contributing both with the bat and ball.

The all-rounder scored 149 runs in six innings at a strike rate nearing 142 and collected seven wickets during the tournament, strengthening her case for a World Cup return.

Group Stage Schedule Confirmed

Tahlia Wilson has been included as the travelling reserve for the competition.

Australia have been placed in Group 1 alongside South Africa, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Netherlands. The group is expected to be highly competitive, particularly with several teams entering the tournament in strong form.

The six-time champions will begin their campaign against South Africa on June 13 at Old Trafford in Manchester. They will then face Bangladesh, the Netherlands, Pakistan and India during the group stage.

The clash against India at Lord’s on June 28 is expected to be one of the standout matches of the opening phase, given the recent rivalry between the two sides in ICC tournaments and bilateral series.

Australia Squad: Sophie Molineux (captain), Nicola Carey, Ash Gardner, Kim Garth, Lucy Hamilton, Grace Harris, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Tahlia McGrath, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Voll, Georgia Wareham. Travelling reserve: Tahlia Wilson.
