Sudden Chaos at Sapru Maidan

The incident occurred at Sapru Maidan in the Shuklaganj area during a match organised by the Kanpur Cricket Association. According to police officials, the game was underway when a large group of bees unexpectedly attacked players, match officials, and others present at the venue.

Manik Gupta, a resident of Kanpur who was officiating as umpire, was among those caught in the swarm. Witnesses said the attack sparked immediate panic on the field as cricketers and spectators scrambled to find shelter.

Authorities confirmed that the swarm appeared without warning, giving little time for those present to react. The match was immediately halted as people ran off the ground in an attempt to protect themselves from the stings.

Umpire Succumbs to Injuries

Eyewitness accounts indicate that Gupta was stung multiple times and soon collapsed on the field. He was first taken to a private hospital in Shuklaganj for emergency care. However, as his condition worsened, doctors referred him to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Kanpur for advanced treatment.

Medical officials at the hospital later declared him dead.

Police said another umpire and approximately 15 to 20 players also suffered bee stings during the incident. Most of the injured were treated for minor injuries, and their condition was reported to be stable.

Officials Confirm the Incident

S. N. Singh, president of the Kanpur Cricket Association, confirmed the sequence of events in a statement. He said the association was deeply saddened by the loss of Manik Gupta, who had been serving as umpire during the match.

Singh described the severity of the attack, noting that when Gupta was being transported to the hospital, bees were still clinging to his face and body. He expressed condolences on behalf of the association and said it stands in support of the bereaved family.

Police officials stated that no foul play was suspected and described the incident as an unfortunate natural occurrence. They added that further inquiries are underway to understand how such a large swarm reached the ground during the match.

Safety Concerns After the Tragedy

The incident has raised questions about safety arrangements at local sporting events, particularly in open grounds where unexpected environmental hazards may arise. While bee attacks are rare in organised matches, authorities indicated that preventive measures may be reviewed to avoid similar situations in the future.

Local residents described the scene as chaotic, with people covering their faces and rushing out of the stadium area. Some players reportedly sought shelter in nearby buildings until the swarm dispersed.

The tragic death of Manik Gupta has cast a shadow over the local cricket community. Colleagues and players remembered him as a dedicated official who had been associated with the sport for years.

Further updates are awaited as authorities continue their assessment of the incident. For now, the focus remains on supporting the injured and extending assistance to the grieving family.
