Cricket – New Zealand Cricket has announced its A squads for an upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, featuring a blend of experienced internationals and rising domestic performers. The tour, scheduled to begin on April 5, will include three one-day matches and two four-day fixtures to be played in Galle and Hambantota.

Strong mix of international and domestic talent

A total of nine players with international experience have been included across the two squads, highlighting the depth within New Zealand’s talent pool. The 50-over squad features several players who have already represented the national side, including Muhammad Abbas, Adithya Ashok, Kristian Clarke, Mitch Hay, Ben Lister, Rhys Mariu, Ben Sears, and Tim Robinson.

These players are expected to bring valuable experience to the group while also continuing their own development in overseas conditions. However, some of them will not be available for the entire tour. Abbas, Ashok, Clarke, and Sears are set to leave midway to join New Zealand’s ODI squad in Bangladesh. Robinson will also depart after the opening red-ball match to link up with the national T20I team.

Fresh faces earn maiden opportunities

The tour also provides a platform for several newcomers who have impressed in domestic cricket. Ryan Harrison, Jarrod McKay, Fraser Sheat, Peter Younghusband, and Rohit Gulati have all received their first call-ups to the New Zealand A setup.

Their inclusion reflects consistent performances at the provincial level throughout the season. Selectors appear keen to test these players in overseas conditions, which are often seen as crucial for long-term development.

Pace attack strengthened for red-ball matches

The four-day squad has been reinforced with a strong pace-bowling unit. Recent Test debutant Michael Rae joins forces with Jarrod McKay and Fraser Sheat, forming a promising seam attack. Alongside them are allrounders Ryan Harrison and Peter Younghusband, who add balance to the squad with both bat and ball.

This combination is expected to play a key role in the longer format matches, particularly in adapting to Sri Lankan pitches that can vary significantly in pace and spin.

Focus on development and future success

Selection manager Gavin Larsen emphasized the importance of such tours in building a strong pipeline of talent for the national team. He noted that giving high-performing domestic players exposure to international conditions is essential for sustaining long-term success.

Larsen also pointed to New Zealand’s recent achievements across formats, including series victories against England, the West Indies, India (away), and South Africa. He credited the domestic system for producing players capable of stepping up when required.

Tour schedule and squad departures

The one-day squad is scheduled to depart for Sri Lanka on April 3, with the red-ball players joining the tour a week later on April 10. The staggered travel plans reflect the different match formats and player availability due to national team commitments.
