Cricket – European Nations T20 Tournament Likely to Debut by 2027
Cricket – Cricket Ireland is working towards introducing a new continental competition, tentatively titled the Euro Nations Cup, with expectations that it could begin as early as 2027. The initiative, led by Cricket Ireland Chair Brian MacNeice, reflects a broader push to strengthen the sport’s footprint across Europe.
Plans Take Shape for Continental Competition
Speaking during the announcement of Ireland’s 2026 home fixtures, MacNeice confirmed that discussions around the tournament have progressed significantly. He indicated that conversations with various stakeholders have reached an advanced stage, increasing confidence that the event will soon become a reality.
The proposed competition is expected to feature leading European sides such as England, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, and Italy. Designed along the lines of existing regional tournaments, it aims to bring together top teams in a structured and competitive format.
Format and Structure Under Consideration
Although final details are yet to be confirmed, the tournament is likely to adopt the T20 format, aligning with the growing global preference for shorter formats of the game. Importantly, organizers intend for the event to include both men’s and women’s competitions, ensuring equal representation and opportunities.
MacNeice noted that while broadcast discussions are still in early stages, there is optimism about attracting media interest once the framework is finalized. Formal announcements regarding format, scheduling, and partnerships are expected in the coming months.
Ireland’s Packed International Calendar
Alongside these developments, Cricket Ireland has unveiled an extensive home schedule for 2026, featuring several high-profile fixtures. The season will begin with a Test match against New Zealand in Belfast, scheduled from May 27 to May 30.
Shortly after, Ireland will host India for a two-match T20 International series in late June. This will be followed by a five-match One Day International series against Afghanistan in August, offering fans a diverse lineup of competitive cricket throughout the summer.
Women’s Team Set for Key International Engagements
Ireland’s women’s team is also preparing for a demanding period as part of the ICC Women’s Championship cycle. The team will host major cricketing nations including India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and the West Indies, while also embarking on overseas tours to England, Australia, Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka.
Their home season begins with a series against the West Indies in July, followed by an away tour to England in September. The team is also scheduled to visit Zimbabwe in early 2027, continuing its preparations for global competitions.

In addition to bilateral series, Ireland’s women’s side will participate in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, set to take place in England and Wales. The tournament begins on June 12, with Ireland placed in a competitive group featuring England, defending champions New Zealand, Scotland, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies.
