Weather Update – Tamil Nadu Braces for Increased Rainfall This Week

Weather Update – A developing low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to bring fresh rainfall activity across several parts of Tamil Nadu over the next few days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Tamil nadu rainfall alert this week

The weather system, which has formed close to the Sri Lankan coast, is likely to strengthen gradually within the next 48 hours. Officials from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai said the system is being monitored closely, though there is no indication of any major severe weather threat to the state at present.

Rainfall Likely Across Coastal and Delta Districts

Meteorologists have predicted moderate rainfall in isolated areas of Tamil Nadu, especially in southern coastal districts and delta regions, during the next four days. Cloudy weather and short spells of rain are also expected in multiple regions as moisture levels continue to rise over the Bay of Bengal.

The developing atmospheric conditions are expected to increase moisture movement towards the Tamil Nadu coast, supporting intermittent showers and thunderstorm activity in several districts.

Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Multiple Districts

The IMD has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in at least 10 districts on May 15 and 16. Districts likely to receive intense rain accompanied by thunderstorms include Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga.

Weather experts said rainfall intensity may rise further in western and interior regions because of localised atmospheric instability combined with moisture inflow triggered by the low-pressure area.

Authorities are continuing to monitor developments carefully as the weather system evolves over the Bay of Bengal.

Fishermen Asked to Remain Cautious

The weather department has advised fishermen to stay alert and regularly follow official forecasts before heading into the sea. Sea conditions along parts of the Tamil Nadu coast adjoining the Bay of Bengal could become rough as the weather system gains strength.

Officials stressed that precautionary measures are important, particularly for those involved in fishing activities near coastal waters during the warning period.

Chennai May Get Relief From Heat

In Chennai, residents are likely to experience partly cloudy to overcast skies over the next two days. According to the latest forecast, daytime temperatures in the city are expected to remain below 37 degrees Celsius, bringing mild relief from the ongoing summer heat.

The expected cloud cover and occasional rainfall may help lower daytime discomfort levels that have persisted in recent weeks.

Pre-Monsoon Activity Increasing Across South India

The latest weather development comes at a time when pre-monsoon activity has started intensifying across several parts of south India. Over the past week, scattered rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds have been reported in different states across the region.

Meteorologists believe the evolving low-pressure system could further influence weather conditions in southern peninsular India in the coming days. However, officials said forecasts may be updated depending on how the system develops over the sea.

The IMD has urged residents to stay updated through official weather bulletins, especially in districts expected to receive heavy rainfall later this week.
