UrbanDevelopment – Delhi Plans Renaming of Heritage Body for Old City Revamp
UrbanDevelopment – The Delhi government is moving ahead with a proposal to rename the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SDRC), the agency responsible for restoring the historic Walled City. According to officials, the new name under consideration is “Indraprastha Virasat Redevelopment Corporation,” reflecting a broader cultural and historical identity. The decision was approved during a board meeting held on March 13, chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

Proposal Approved After Board Deliberations
An official document confirmed that the board carefully reviewed and accepted the proposal following detailed discussions. The renaming is now awaiting final registration with the Registrar of Companies, which remains the last procedural step before implementation.
Officials noted that multiple delegations had earlier approached the government, urging a change in the corporation’s name. These requests played a role in shaping the final decision taken by the board.
Government Signals Broader Restructuring Plan
Chief Minister Gupta indicated that the renaming is part of a larger effort to reorganize and strengthen the functioning of the agency. She emphasized that the move is not limited to a symbolic change but is intended to accelerate meaningful redevelopment work in Old Delhi.
According to her, the government is focusing on a comprehensive revival strategy that will improve infrastructure while preserving the area’s historical identity. The initiative aims to balance modernization with conservation.
Historical Context Behind the New Name
The proposed name “Indraprastha” draws from ancient Indian history, referring to the legendary city mentioned in the Mahabharata, believed to be associated with present-day Delhi. In contrast, the existing name “Shahjahanabad” originates from the Mughal period, when Emperor Shah Jahan established the old city and commissioned landmarks such as the Red Fort and Jama Masjid.
By adopting the new name, the government appears to be aligning the redevelopment agency with a broader historical narrative that extends beyond the Mughal era.
Role and Responsibilities of the Corporation
The SDRC was established as a special purpose entity under the Companies Act of 1956. Its primary role includes preserving heritage structures such as city walls, gates, bridges, and public spaces. In addition, it is tasked with improving civic amenities like water supply, sewer systems, electricity, and public transport within the Walled City.
The corporation also works on maintaining the visual and cultural character of the area while addressing the challenges of urban congestion and aging infrastructure.
Ongoing Projects and Development Plans
During the recent board meeting, several ongoing and upcoming projects were reviewed. The government has already initiated development work worth approximately Rs 160 crore across 28 roads in Old Delhi.
These projects cover a range of improvements, including road upgrades, better sanitation systems, and the beautification of public areas. Efforts are also being made to enhance the maintenance of public toilets and strengthen cleanliness drives across the region.
Focus on Infrastructure Modernization
One of the key proposals under consideration is the gradual shift of overhead electrical wiring underground. This move is expected to improve safety, reduce visual clutter, and help maintain the historic appearance of the area.
Officials said the plan will be implemented in phases to ensure minimal disruption while upgrading essential services.
Town Hall Restoration and Cultural Preservation
The government has also announced plans to develop the historic Town Hall as a major heritage landmark. This initiative is expected to boost the cultural appeal of Old Delhi and attract more visitors.
Chief Minister Gupta described Old Delhi as the cultural core of the national capital and reiterated the government’s commitment to preserving its heritage while enabling modern urban development.
