TVKUnion – Transport Employees Plan New Workers’ Front After TVK Gains Momentum
TVKUnion – Tamil Nadu’s public transport sector could soon witness the rise of a new workers’ organisation as employees linked to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) begin efforts to establish a trade union within State Transport Undertakings following the party’s strong electoral performance.

The initiative has reportedly gained traction among drivers, conductors and other transport staff employed in the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) and the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC). Employees associated with actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party are said to be discussing the structure and launch of a dedicated labour union aligned with TVK’s political ideology.
Supporters Celebrate Party’s Electoral Progress
In the days following the Assembly election results, groups of transport workers who openly backed TVK celebrated across several transport corporation branches in different districts. According to transport department sources, employees distributed sweets and gathered near branch offices to mark the party’s growing political presence in the state.
Many of these workers had actively participated in campaign activities during the elections and viewed the results as a sign of expanding support for the party among ordinary citizens and younger voters.
Move Towards an Independent Trade Union
Employees involved in the discussions believe a separate union is necessary to represent transport workers who identify with TVK. The proposed organisation is expected to function similarly to existing labour unions associated with major Dravidian parties, which have historically maintained strong influence within transport corporations.
Sources familiar with the development said party supporters working in TNSTC and SETC have already contacted senior TVK leaders seeking guidance and official backing for the formation of the union. Preliminary consultations regarding leadership positions and organisational arrangements are also believed to be underway.
Focus on Pending Employee Concerns
Transport employees backing the initiative say the proposed union would focus primarily on workplace issues affecting staff across state-run transport corporations. Among the concerns likely to be raised are salary disputes, retirement-related benefits, transfer procedures, increasing workloads and service conditions.
Workers involved in the effort argue that several long-standing grievances have remained unresolved for years and require stronger representation before transport authorities.
A driver attached to the TNSTC’s Mettupalayam region reportedly stated that the union could be formally launched in the near future. He also noted that many transport employees currently associated with unions linked to the DMK and AIADMK were reconsidering their affiliations after TVK’s electoral rise.
Changing Political Equations in Labour Circles
Political analysts view the development as an indication of TVK’s growing reach among sections of organised labour and government employees. The party appears to be attracting younger workers, especially those who were previously connected to Vijay fan associations and later became active in political campaigning.
Observers also believe the emergence of a TVK-backed union may gradually influence labour dynamics within state transport corporations, where trade unions traditionally play a major role in negotiations with management and in discussions related to employee welfare policies.
Transport Sector Watching Developments Closely
The situation is being closely monitored within Tamil Nadu’s transport sector because employee unions have long remained an important part of administrative and operational decision-making. Any new union entering the space could alter the balance among existing labour organisations that have historically been tied to established political parties.
While no official announcement has yet been made regarding the launch date of the proposed union, discussions among employees and party representatives are reportedly continuing at multiple levels.
