TribalDevelopment – UNICEF Commends Bastar’s Grassroots Efforts Transforming Child Welfare
TribalDevelopment – UNICEF has praised a series of locally driven development initiatives in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region that are helping improve the lives of tribal children and families by expanding access to healthcare, nutrition support, mental well-being services, and essential government facilities.

The appreciation came during a field visit by Soledad Herrero, Chief of Field Services at UNICEF India, who toured Narayanpur and Kondagaon districts along with Seema Kumar, Chief of UNICEF Chhattisgarh. The visit provided an opportunity to assess several community-focused programmes designed to address long-standing challenges in remote tribal areas.
Innovative Healthcare Solutions Reach Remote Communities
The delegation began its visit in Akabeda village of Narayanpur district, where difficult terrain and limited connectivity have traditionally made access to healthcare services challenging. Officials observed multiple initiatives aimed at ensuring that residents in distant locations receive timely support without having to travel long distances.
Among the key interventions reviewed were healthcare camps organized during weekly local markets, allowing villagers to access medical services within familiar community spaces. The team also visited Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres that are working to support children suffering from severe acute malnutrition, a critical concern in several tribal regions.
Mobility-Based Services Improve Accessibility
Two unique service models received particular attention during the visit. The Motorbike Ambulance Service has been introduced to transport patients across difficult routes where conventional vehicles often struggle to operate. This initiative has helped improve emergency medical access for residents living in isolated settlements.
Another notable project, known as the Sushasan Express, functions as a mobile public service vehicle. The programme delivers various government services directly to villages, reducing the need for citizens to travel to administrative centres for essential documentation and welfare-related assistance.
During discussions with Narayanpur Collector Namrata Jain, Herrero acknowledged the district administration’s efforts in developing practical solutions that directly benefit women and children living in remote areas.
Youth Engagement and Mental Health Take Centre Stage
In Kondagaon district, the focus shifted toward community participation and youth-led social initiatives. The UNICEF representatives interacted with members of the Yuvodaya volunteer network, which actively supports local development efforts through community engagement.
The delegation also reviewed the progress of the “Aao Baat Karen” mental health programme. The initiative encourages open conversations around emotional well-being and seeks to create supportive spaces for young people and community members facing mental health challenges.
Officials highlighted the importance of such programmes in strengthening social support systems while promoting awareness about mental wellness in rural communities.
Discussions on Expanding Successful Models
A review meeting was later held with Kondagaon Collector Nupur Rashi Panna to examine opportunities for replicating and expanding successful grassroots interventions in other regions. The discussions focused on identifying practical strategies that can be adapted to meet the needs of communities facing similar developmental challenges.
Speaking during the visit, Herrero said that community-driven approaches combined with strong partnerships and supportive public policies can create meaningful and long-term improvements for children. She noted that districts such as Narayanpur and Kondagaon demonstrate how local innovation can overcome barriers and deliver impactful results even in geographically challenging areas.
Continued Focus on Child-Centred Development
The visit concluded with renewed commitment between UNICEF and the Chhattisgarh government to continue working together on programmes that prioritize children’s welfare. Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening grassroots participation, expanding access to essential services, and maintaining administrative support for inclusive development.
Officials believe that sustained collaboration and locally tailored solutions will play a crucial role in improving the quality of life for children and families across the Bastar region in the years ahead.
