Devotees Participate in Sacred River Rituals

From the early hours of the morning, ghats across Haridwar witnessed heavy crowds as worshippers stepped into the river to perform traditional rituals. Many devotees offered prayers while priests conducted religious ceremonies near the water. The atmosphere remained devotional throughout the day as chants, temple bells, and sacred hymns echoed across the city.

Ganga Dussehra is observed to commemorate the descent of the River Ganga from heaven to Earth, according to Hindu scriptures. The festival holds deep spiritual significance and is celebrated annually on the Dashami day during the Shukla Paksha period of the Hindu month of Jyeshtha.

Evening Aarti Draws Pilgrims and Tourists

As the day progressed, pilgrims and visitors gathered in large numbers for the evening Ganga Aarti, one of Haridwar’s most recognised spiritual events. Lamps floated across the river while priests performed synchronized rituals at the ghats. Tourists, along with devotees, watched the ceremony that symbolises reverence toward the sacred river.

Authorities maintained security arrangements and crowd management measures due to the significant increase in footfall during the festival period. Local officials monitored the movement of visitors to ensure smooth conduct of religious activities.

Festival Celebrated Over Ten Days

The celebrations associated with Ganga Dussehra traditionally continue for ten days, with the final day considered the most auspicious. Religious organisations and temple committees across Haridwar organised prayer meetings, devotional music events, and community activities during the festival.

The occasion also boosts spiritual tourism in Uttarakhand, especially in Haridwar, which remains one of the most visited pilgrimage destinations in India. Hotels, dharamshalas, and local businesses witnessed increased activity as visitors arrived to take part in the celebrations.

Chief Minister Highlights Pilgrimage Preparations

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami addressed a public gathering in Haridwar on Sunday while inaugurating the newly built Shri Anand Dharamshala and the Anand Dharamshala Trust.

During his speech, the Chief Minister praised the Kshatriya Kalauta community for its contribution to social welfare and national development. He stated that the community has played an important role in sectors such as agriculture, education, trade, public service, and national security through dedication and hard work.

Dhami also spoke about the state government’s ongoing preparations for the Char Dham Yatra and the 2027 Kumbh Mela. He urged pilgrims to complete official registration procedures before beginning their journeys to help authorities manage travel arrangements effectively and maintain safety during the large-scale religious events.

Focus on Religious Tourism and Infrastructure

The Uttarakhand government has been strengthening infrastructure and public facilities in pilgrimage centres ahead of upcoming religious gatherings. Officials are focusing on accommodation, transport management, sanitation, and emergency services as part of preparations for future tourism and spiritual events in the state.

Haridwar continues to remain at the centre of major religious observances in northern India, drawing lakhs of devotees every year during festivals linked to the River Ganga and Hindu traditions.
