TradeDeal – India Secures Better Terms During Ongoing US Trade Discussions
TradeDeal – India has gained a comparatively stronger position in several sectors during continuing trade negotiations with the United States, according to sources familiar with the discussions. The progress is linked to products currently being examined under Section 232 of the US Trade Expansion Act, a law that allows Washington to impose tariffs on imports considered sensitive to national security interests.
Officials aware of the negotiations said India has managed to obtain favourable treatment for aircraft components and limited relief for auto parts. A framework related to generic pharmaceutical products has also reportedly been worked out during the talks.
The discussions form part of broader efforts by both countries to deepen economic cooperation while reducing trade barriers in strategic sectors.
Relief for Key Export Segments
Sources from India’s commerce ministry indicated that aircraft parts exported from India may receive exemptions under the ongoing Section 232 review process. Auto component manufacturers are also expected to benefit from partial relaxations, though details are still being finalised.
India has additionally secured a working arrangement involving generic medicines, a major export category for the country. At present, generic pharmaceutical products shipped from India do not attract tariffs in the US market, but the sector remains under review as part of the American investigation process.
A senior official familiar with the matter stated that the terms achieved by India compare favourably with those granted to competing nations involved in similar trade arrangements with the United States.
Understanding Section 232 Measures
Section 232 of the US Trade Expansion Act of 1962 gives the American government authority to investigate whether imported goods could affect national security. Following such investigations, the US administration can introduce tariffs or trade restrictions on selected products.
Over the years, Washington has used this provision to impose duties on industries including steel, aluminium, automobiles, aircraft parts, semiconductors and pharmaceutical products.
Current tariffs under these measures range between 10 percent and 50 percent, depending on the product category. Several Indian exports, particularly steel, aluminium and automobile parts, continue to face higher duties in the American market under these provisions.
Trade experts believe any relaxation in these areas could improve the competitiveness of Indian manufacturers and exporters operating in the US market.
February Agreement Set the Foundation
The latest developments follow a joint statement signed by India and the United States in February 2025. In that agreement, Washington had expressed willingness to explore negotiated outcomes concerning generic pharmaceutical products and related ingredients, depending on the outcome of the Section 232 investigation.
Indian negotiators have since been seeking product-specific exemptions and tariff adjustments as part of wider bilateral trade discussions.
Officials involved in the process say the current negotiations are aimed at achieving practical outcomes before a larger trade agreement is finalised.
Bilateral Trade Talks Continue
India and the United States are presently working toward a proposed bilateral trade agreement intended to strengthen commercial ties between the two economies. Both sides are reportedly trying to conclude an interim understanding before moving ahead with a broader and more comprehensive pact.
Trade and investment have remained key priorities in recent diplomatic engagements between New Delhi and Washington, particularly in sectors linked to manufacturing, technology, defence and healthcare.
Industry observers note that easing tariff pressures on critical export sectors could support India’s ambitions to expand its presence in global supply chains.
High-Level Visits Expected to Advance Discussions
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit India from May 23 to 26. The visit will focus on strengthening cooperation in trade, defence and energy-related areas. It will mark his first official trip to India since assuming office.
Meanwhile, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that a US delegation is expected to arrive in India next month for another round of negotiations linked to the proposed trade agreement.
The upcoming discussions are expected to build on earlier meetings held in Washington during April between senior officials from both countries.
