Tourism – Delhi Prepares to Launch Yamuna River Cruise Service Soon
Tourism – The Delhi government is moving closer to introducing a new cruise service on the Yamuna River, with officials indicating that the formal launch date will be announced within the next two weeks. Preparations are in their final stages, and operations are expected to begin as early as next month, offering residents and visitors a fresh recreational option within the capital.

Planned Route and Experience
The upcoming cruise service will operate along a 6 to 7-kilometre stretch of the Yamuna, connecting Sonia Vihar to Jagatpur, located upstream of the Wazirabad Barrage. The route has been selected to provide a relatively clean and scenic section of the river, suitable for leisure travel.
Passengers can expect hour-long round trips designed to deliver a relaxing experience on the water. The initiative aims to blend sightseeing with comfort, giving people a chance to view parts of the city from a different perspective.
Vessel Features and Readiness
The vessel, which has a seating capacity of 40 passengers, was constructed in Mumbai and transported to Delhi earlier this year. Interior work has been completed, and the cruise is now ready for service. Onboard arrangements include music systems, entertainment options, and food services, ensuring a comfortable journey for travelers.
Officials involved in the project have confirmed that the cruise is fully equipped to meet operational requirements and is awaiting final clearances before welcoming passengers.
Infrastructure Development Along the Riverfront
The cruise service is part of a broader riverfront development plan aimed at boosting tourism and recreational activities in the city. The project, estimated to cost around ₹20 crore, focuses on promoting eco-friendly travel and improving public engagement with the Yamuna.
While significant progress has been made, some infrastructure components are still under development. These include ticketing counters, waiting areas, charging stations, parking facilities, and basic amenities such as drinking water and sanitation services.
Authorities have also been working on creating recreational spaces around the boarding area to enhance the overall visitor experience.
Ongoing Work and Final Touches
A recent site inspection showed that work is progressing steadily, though certain finishing tasks remain incomplete. Staff members present at the site indicated that multiple agencies are coordinating efforts to ensure that all facilities are ready before the official launch.
Floating jetties and other essential onshore structures have already been installed, providing safe and accessible boarding points for passengers. Officials are focused on completing the remaining tasks within the stipulated timeline.
Environmental Focus and Long-Term Vision
The cruise project is also aligned with broader environmental goals. Authorities have emphasized that the service will adhere to international safety standards and promote sustainable tourism practices.
Efforts are underway to improve the condition of the Yamuna, particularly in downstream areas where sewage treatment systems are being developed. The government has been working on intercepting and treating wastewater to ensure cleaner water flow in the future.
In upstream areas, including the cruise route, the focus is on reconnecting people with the river by creating accessible and environmentally responsible recreational spaces.
Collaboration Between Agencies
The project has been implemented through coordination between multiple agencies, including the central government, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and the Delhi government. A memorandum of understanding was signed earlier to streamline efforts and ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.
Officials believe that this collaboration will not only support the successful launch of the cruise but also pave the way for future river-based initiatives in the capital.
A New Addition to City Attractions
Once operational, the Yamuna cruise is expected to add a new dimension to Delhi’s tourism landscape. By combining leisure, sustainability, and urban development, the project aims to offer a unique experience while encouraging greater appreciation of the city’s natural resources.
