Security – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tribute to the Indian armed forces while marking the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, describing the military action as a strong and decisive response to the terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 people last year.

The Prime Minister said the operation reflected the courage, discipline and coordination of India’s defence forces. In a message shared on X, he praised the armed personnel for carrying out the mission with precision and determination against terror infrastructure located across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
PM Modi Highlights Armed Forces’ Preparedness
According to the Prime Minister, Operation Sindoor demonstrated India’s clear position against terrorism and reinforced the country’s commitment to protecting national security. He also noted that the mission reflected improved coordination among the Army, Air Force and Navy, alongside advancements in India’s defence manufacturing capabilities.
Mr. Modi stated that the nation continues to remain firm in its approach towards eliminating terrorism and dismantling networks that support extremist activities. He added that the armed forces’ professionalism and operational readiness played a crucial role in the success of the mission.
In a separate message, the Prime Minister said citizens across the country take pride in the bravery and dedication shown by Indian soldiers during the operation. Several senior political leaders also updated their social media profile pictures to feature an “Operation Sindoor” graphic alongside the Indian national flag.
Background of the Pahalgam Terror Attack
Operation Sindoor was launched after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 civilians lost their lives. Investigators said the attackers were linked to The Resistance Front, believed to be associated with the Pakistan-based terror organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Officials stated that the attackers targeted tourists and civilians in a brutal assault that shocked the country. Reports from the investigation revealed that many victims were attacked in front of their family members, while one local pony ride operator was also killed while attempting to protect tourists during the incident.
The incident drew widespread condemnation from across India, leading to renewed calls for stronger counterterrorism measures and tougher action against terror groups operating from across the border.
Operation Sindoor Launched in Response
Following the attack, Indian armed forces conducted Operation Sindoor on May 6 and 7 last year. Government officials described the operation as focused, measured and carefully planned to avoid unnecessary escalation while targeting identified terror infrastructure.
The mission reportedly involved coordinated military action aimed at dismantling high-value terrorist bases and operational facilities located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Defence authorities later said the operation successfully disrupted planned terror activities and sent a strong strategic message against cross-border terrorism.
Security experts viewed the operation as an example of India’s evolving defence strategy, which combines military capability with diplomatic and strategic restraint.
Focus on National Security Continues
Government leaders on Thursday reiterated that India remains committed to maintaining a zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism. Officials said national security agencies continue to strengthen intelligence coordination, border monitoring and counterterrorism preparedness in response to evolving threats.
Operation Sindoor is now being remembered as a major moment in India’s recent security history, reflecting both military readiness and the government’s broader focus on combating terrorism through coordinated action.
