Security – Borivali Train Stabbing Case Accused Sent to Seven-Day Police Custody
Security – A man accused of fatally stabbing a fellow passenger inside a Mumbai suburban train has been placed in police custody as investigators continue gathering evidence to establish the sequence of events.
The man arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 22-year-old passenger aboard a Churchgate–Nalasopara fast local train was produced before a Borivali court on Thursday. After hearing submissions from both the prosecution and the defence, the court granted the Government Railway Police (GRP) seven days of police custody to continue the investigation. The remand will allow officers to question the accused further, verify evidence, and examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Advocate Amit Mishra appeared on behalf of the accused during the court proceedings.
Dispute Inside Moving Train Turned Fatal
The incident occurred on the night of June 23 aboard Train No. 90663 travelling from Churchgate to Nalasopara. According to investigators, an argument began between the accused, Roshan Suvarna, and passenger Mayank Lohar regarding whether the coach door should remain open or closed during heavy rainfall. As the train travelled between Andheri and Borivali stations, the disagreement reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation. Police allege that Suvarna then pulled out a knife from his bag and stabbed Lohar in the abdomen, causing critical injuries.
Viral Video Circulates on Social Media
Following the incident, a video claiming to show the aftermath inside the train coach circulated widely on social media. The footage appears to show bloodstains on the floor, the injured passenger lying close to the doorway, and a man allegedly holding a knife while fellow commuters looked on in panic. However, the authenticity of the viral video has not been independently verified by LokmatTimes.com.
Police Investigation Led to Arrest
Investigators said the accused allegedly got off the train before it came to a complete halt at Borivali railway station. Meanwhile, the injured victim was rushed for medical treatment but was declared dead after doctors found that the injuries were severe. Soon after the incident, the Government Railway Police, along with the Railway Protection Force, formed multiple teams to locate and apprehend the suspect.
CCTV Footage Played a Key Role
As part of the investigation, officers reviewed CCTV recordings from different railway stations and questioned witnesses. Police said surveillance footage from Andheri reportedly captured the accused near the ticket counter before boarding the train, while additional footage from Borivali showed him leaving the station area shortly after the incident. Based on the collected evidence and other leads, the police tracked down and arrested Suvarna in Mumbai’s Kurla area.
Victim Was a Young Working Professional
The victim, Mayank Lohar, was a 22-year-old resident of Vasai. He had completed his studies in finance and marketing and had been employed for around nine months with Tata’s Westside retail brand at its Chakala outlet in Andheri. Lohar travelled daily by Mumbai’s suburban railway network from Virar to Andheri for work. His death has drawn attention to passenger safety on the city’s heavily used local train system, while the investigation continues under the supervision of the Government Railway Police.
