According to officials, the arrest was made on Tuesday evening at around 8 pm in the Churachandpur area of Manipur. The individual was later handed over to district police authorities on Wednesday for further legal proceedings and questioning.

Suspect Linked to Village Chief’s Death

Security officials stated that the detained man is believed to have played a key role in the killing of Mangthang Haokip, the chief of T Khonomphai village. Investigators suspect that he was involved in planning or coordinating the attack that led to the village leader’s death in 2025.

The incident had drawn widespread concern across the region due to the brutal nature of the assault and the growing tension linked to armed militant activity in parts of Manipur.

Details of the Fatal Assault

Mangthang Haokip, who was 50 years old, was allegedly attacked by suspected militants associated with the United Kuki National Army on October 27 last year. Reports indicated that the village chief was beaten with sticks and other blunt weapons during the assault.

He sustained serious injuries in the attack and was being taken for medical treatment when he died on the way. The incident triggered strong reactions from local organisations and community leaders, who demanded swift action against those responsible.

Security Forces Continue Investigation

Officials have not yet disclosed the full identity of the apprehended suspect, but sources indicated that the investigation is progressing with coordination between Assam Rifles personnel and local police units.

Security agencies are also examining whether additional individuals were involved in the assault. Authorities believe further questioning of the detained cadre could provide crucial information related to the case and militant activities operating in the region.

The Assam Rifles has been actively conducting search and intelligence-based operations in sensitive districts of Manipur amid continuing security concerns. Churachandpur has remained one of the key focus areas due to repeated reports of armed group movement and local unrest.

Community Groups Had Demanded Justice

Following the death of the village chief, the Henglep Headquarter Area Chief Association had strongly condemned the violence. The organisation described the killing as a serious act of brutality and appealed to authorities to identify and punish all those responsible.

Community leaders had also called for stronger security measures in vulnerable villages to prevent similar incidents in the future. The killing had raised fears among residents living in remote areas affected by militant-related tensions.

Police to Continue Legal Action

Police officials are expected to continue interrogation and legal procedures connected to the case. Authorities have not confirmed whether additional arrests may follow, but security agencies indicated that investigations remain active.

The latest arrest is being viewed as an important step in efforts to uncover the full sequence of events surrounding the death of the village chief and to strengthen law enforcement operations in the region.
