Sanjay Dina Patil – MP Apologises After Heated Exchange With Journalists Sparks Row
Sanjay Dina Patil – Mumbai North-East MP Sanjay Dina Patil has issued an unconditional apology after facing widespread criticism over his remarks and conduct during a confrontation with members of the media.

Mumbai North-East Member of Parliament Sanjay Dina Patil has come under intense public and political scrutiny after an angry confrontation with journalists escalated into a major controversy. The MP, who recently switched from Shiv Sena (UBT) to the Shiv Sena led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, later expressed regret and offered an unconditional apology after his remarks drew criticism from political leaders, media organisations and members of the public.
Heated Interaction With Reporters
The confrontation unfolded when journalists approached Patil to seek his response on recent political developments, including his decision to change parties and questions regarding his daughter, Rajul Patil, who has continued to remain with the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT). During the interaction, Patil lost his temper and used offensive language while asking reporters to move their microphones away. He was also heard warning journalists not to approach him again, with the exchange being captured on camera in the presence of police personnel.
Political Leaders and Media Bodies React
The incident quickly triggered strong reactions across Maharashtra. Media organisations condemned the use of threatening language against working journalists, saying public representatives should uphold democratic values and respect press freedom. Several political leaders also criticised the MP’s conduct, arguing that disagreements should never result in intimidation or abusive behaviour toward members of the media.
Sanjay Raut Demands Official Action
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut urged the Mumbai Police to examine the matter and take appropriate action. In his communication to the Police Commissioner, Raut referred to alleged statements attributed to Patil suggesting that he would respond aggressively to anyone protesting against his political switch. The allegations further intensified the controversy and increased pressure on the MP.
Eknath Shinde Calls for Restraint
As criticism continued to grow, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stepped in and advised Patil to publicly express regret over the incident. Shinde acknowledged that political rivalry has become increasingly bitter since the Shiv Sena split in 2022, with personal remarks often extending to family members. However, he maintained that elected representatives must continue to treat journalists with dignity and avoid confrontational behaviour during media interactions.
Shinde also said Patil’s anger stemmed from frustration over repeated personal attacks by political opponents rather than hostility toward the media. According to him, the MP’s reaction should be viewed in the context of the increasingly aggressive political environment, although he stressed that such exchanges should not take place in front of journalists.
Chief Minister Awaits Complete Details
Without directly naming Sanjay Raut, Shinde criticised political leaders who regularly use aggressive language in public, saying such rhetoric weakens political discourse and disrespects the media. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also oversees the Home Department, said he would review the matter carefully before making any detailed statement.
Patil’s apology has brought some closure to the immediate controversy, but the episode has once again highlighted concerns about the treatment of journalists during political events and the importance of maintaining respectful public discourse despite sharp political differences.
