Safety – Delhi Civic Body Plans Action Against Illegal Buildings After Deadly Collapse
Safety – The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is preparing to intensify action against unauthorized constructions across several parts of south Delhi following the collapse of a multi-storey building in Saket that resulted in the deaths of six people. The incident has renewed concerns over building safety and adherence to construction regulations in densely populated residential areas.

Inspection Drive to Begin in South Delhi
Senior officials from the civic body said a large-scale inspection and enforcement campaign is expected to begin this week. The initiative will focus on identifying structures that do not comply with approved building norms and regulations. Areas including Saket, Mehrauli and nearby localities are expected to be among the first locations covered under the drive.
According to officials, notices will be served to property owners whose buildings exceed permitted construction limits. The administration will closely examine structures that have been built beyond the approved number of floors and those suspected of violating municipal guidelines.
Focus on Areas With High Number of Violations
Officials indicated that several localities have witnessed extensive unauthorized construction activity over the years. Neighborhoods such as Saidulajab, Paryavaran Complex and Freedom Fighters’ Enclave are expected to undergo detailed inspections as part of the enforcement effort.
Authorities also plan to survey Mehrauli and surrounding regions to identify buildings that may have been constructed without proper approvals or in violation of sanctioned plans. The inspections are aimed at assessing both regulatory compliance and public safety risks.
Notices to Be Issued Before Enforcement
The civic body stated that legal procedures will be followed before any action is taken. Property owners found violating building regulations will receive notices and be given a period of 72 hours to respond.
Once the notice period expires, authorities may proceed with measures including sealing the premises and directing occupants to vacate buildings that are found to be in violation of the law. Officials said these actions are intended to prevent potential safety hazards and ensure compliance with municipal regulations.
Existing Rules Allow Strict Action
MCD officials explained that enforcement measures are generally undertaken in cases involving unauthorized construction, major deviations from approved building plans, or commercial activities being carried out without permission in areas not designated for such use.
The corporation has the authority to seal properties, issue eviction notices and initiate further legal proceedings where necessary. Officials emphasized that the objective is to improve urban safety standards and discourage illegal development practices.
Government Promises Accountability
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has assured residents that strict action will be taken against all unauthorized construction activities. In a public statement, she said that responsibility would be determined wherever negligence is found and that violations of building regulations would not be overlooked.
The Chief Minister also stressed that no individual, builder, official or institution would be exempt from legal scrutiny. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring public safety, transparency and accountability while supporting affected residents and preventing similar incidents in the future.
The planned enforcement campaign marks one of the most significant recent efforts to address concerns related to unauthorized construction in south Delhi. Authorities hope that stricter monitoring and timely action will help reduce safety risks and encourage compliance with building regulations across the city.
