West Bengal Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh visited the injured passengers undergoing treatment on Sunday and reviewed the medical arrangements being provided at the hospital. Speaking to reporters during the visit, he expressed grief over the loss of lives and said the administration was closely monitoring the condition of those who suffered serious injuries.
According to the minister, discussions have been held with healthcare officials to ensure that critically injured patients receive the best available treatment. He noted that the state government is committed to extending all possible support to those affected by the accident.
Government Announces Financial Assistance
In response to the tragedy, the state government has announced compensation for both the families of the deceased and those injured in the crash. Officials confirmed that the next of kin of each victim who lost their life will receive financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh.
Passengers who sustained severe injuries will be provided Rs 1 lakh, while those with minor injuries will receive Rs 50,000. Authorities also stated that all medical expenses incurred for the treatment of the injured at government healthcare facilities will be fully covered by the state.
The administration said these measures are intended to provide immediate relief to families dealing with the aftermath of the accident and to ensure that financial concerns do not become an additional burden during recovery.
Details of the Collision
Preliminary information from officials indicates that the accident occurred when a North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) bus travelling from Siliguri to Cooch Behar collided with the rear portion of a stationary trailer parked on the highway.
The impact of the collision was reportedly severe. The rear section of the trailer entered the front portion of the bus, causing extensive structural damage. Several passengers became trapped inside the vehicle and rescue teams had to work to free those caught in the wreckage.
Emergency responders, local authorities and medical teams rushed to the scene shortly after receiving information about the crash. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals, where they continue to receive treatment.
