Refunds – The National Testing Agency (NTA) narrowly avoided a major setback after identifying suspicious financial activity just before initiating refunds for candidates affected by the cancellation of the NEET-UG examination. Careful verification procedures and the use of advanced digital monitoring tools enabled the agency to halt the process before any money was transferred.
Unusual Account Details Trigger Investigation
The issue surfaced on Sunday when officials began reviewing bank account information submitted for fee reimbursements. According to sources familiar with the matter, authorities noticed an unusual case where nearly 70 candidates had reportedly provided the same bank account for receiving refunds.
The discovery immediately raised concerns among officials. Banking regulations generally do not permit such a large number of individuals to be linked to a single account, prompting the agency to conduct a deeper examination of the submitted data. As a precautionary measure, the planned reimbursement exercise was suspended pending further verification.
Data Analytics Reveal Wider Pattern
Following the initial finding, the NTA intensified its scrutiny by deploying data analytics and digital verification systems. The review reportedly uncovered several additional instances involving questionable banking information.
Officials stated that these findings indicated a broader pattern rather than an isolated case. The agency subsequently decided to stop the refund process entirely until all account details could be verified and secured.
Cybercrime Angle Emerges
The matter was quickly reported to law enforcement agencies. Preliminary investigations conducted with the assistance of Gujarat Cyber Police pointed toward cybercriminal activity allegedly linked to individuals operating from Bihar.
Investigators believe the fraudsters may have gained unauthorized access to multiple bank accounts by exploiting weak passwords commonly used by account holders. Password combinations such as simple number sequences and dates of birth are believed to have been among the vulnerabilities targeted by the attackers.
Authorities suspect that compromised accounts were then used in an attempt to divert refund payments intended for eligible candidates.
Public Advisory Issued to Candidates
In response to the findings, the NTA released a public notice late Sunday night advising candidates to carefully review their banking information. The agency also encouraged applicants to strengthen the security of their accounts by enabling two-factor authentication and updating weak passwords.
Officials emphasized that candidates should ensure all submitted account details are accurate and belong to them before the reimbursement process resumes.
Financial Loss Prevented in Time
Sources indicated that the agency was preparing to refund approximately ₹300 crore collected from candidates who had registered for the cancelled NEET-UG examination. Had the suspicious activity gone undetected, a substantial amount of public money could have been exposed to fraudulent transactions.
Officials confirmed that no refund payments had been processed at the time the irregularities were identified. As a result, the agency successfully prevented any financial loss while investigations continue.
Refund Amounts for Different Categories
The reimbursement initiative was announced after the cancellation of the May 3 NEET-UG examination, a decision that drew strong reactions from students and parents across the country.
The examination fees scheduled for refund are ₹1,700 for candidates in the General category, ₹1,600 for applicants belonging to OBC and EWS categories, and ₹1,000 for candidates from SC, ST, and Persons with Disabilities categories. NRI applicants are eligible for a refund of ₹9,500.
The NTA is expected to resume the reimbursement process only after completing additional verification measures to ensure that payments reach the rightful candidates securely.
