RajyaSabhaElection – INDIA Bloc Faces Fresh Strains After Jharkhand Poll Outcome
RajyaSabhaElection – A bitter political dispute has erupted within the INDIA bloc following the unexpected defeat of the Congress candidate in the Rajya Sabha election in Jharkhand. Despite the ruling alliance holding a numerical edge in the 81-member Assembly, the result has sparked allegations of disloyalty and cross-voting among coalition partners, raising fresh questions about coordination and trust within the opposition alliance.

Congress Points to Lack of Support
Soon after the election result, Congress leaders blamed their allies for the setback. Jharkhand Congress in-charge K. Raju claimed that the party had secured all 16 votes from its legislators and also received four additional votes from its ally, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
According to him, the final outcome suggested that support expected from other alliance partners did not materialize. He alleged that the Congress candidate’s defeat was linked to the conduct of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), accusing them of failing to stand firmly behind the alliance nominee.
CPI(M-L) Rejects Allegations
The CPI(M-L) strongly denied the accusations and maintained that its legislators had fully backed the Congress candidate. Party General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya stated that both MLAs belonging to the party voted according to a previously agreed alliance decision.
He said there was no deviation from the party’s commitment and dismissed speculation surrounding the voting process. CPI(M-L) MLA Arup Chatterjee also defended the party’s position, arguing that smaller alliance partners were being unfairly blamed without evidence.
RJD Responds Sharply
The controversy soon widened as the RJD publicly objected to the Congress leadership’s remarks. State Minister and RJD MLA Sanjay Prasad Yadav criticized the allegations, describing them as inappropriate and unfounded.
He asserted that all four RJD legislators supported the Congress nominee during the election and rejected suggestions of betrayal. Senior RJD leader Bhola Yadav also questioned the Congress narrative, saying the party should examine its own shortcomings before accusing allies of undermining the campaign.
Election Result Alters Political Mood
The Rajya Sabha contest concluded with the victory of BJP-backed Independent candidate Parimal Nathwani, while JMM nominee Baidyanath Ram secured a comfortable win. Out of the 81 votes cast in the Assembly, three ballots were declared invalid.
The defeat of Congress candidate Pranav Jha has become the central focus of political discussions in Jharkhand. What was expected to be a straightforward electoral exercise instead turned into a contentious episode that exposed differences among opposition partners.
Challenge for Opposition Unity
Political observers believe the fallout may have wider implications for the INDIA bloc’s functioning in the state. The exchange of allegations among Congress, RJD and CPI(M-L) has highlighted underlying tensions that were previously kept out of public view.
While alliance leaders are expected to continue working together on larger political issues, the Rajya Sabha election has clearly revealed lingering mistrust among some partners. The episode now presents a significant challenge for the opposition coalition as it seeks to maintain unity and strengthen coordination ahead of future political battles.
