RailwayProject – Chennai Suburban Rail Network Set for Major Capacity Expansion
RailwayProject – The Ministry of Railways has cleared a major railway expansion project aimed at strengthening suburban transportation in and around Chennai. The approved plan includes the construction of a 68-kilometer double railway line between Arakkonam and Chengalpattu under the Southern Railway zone. Officials believe the new line will help improve train movement, reduce delays, and support growing passenger demand across the region.

Project Expected to Reduce Pressure on Busy Rail Routes
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the new double-line corridor will significantly improve the functioning of Chennai’s suburban rail system, which remains one of the busiest commuter networks in the country. According to the minister, the project is designed to ease congestion on heavily used routes while also improving punctuality and operational reliability for daily train services.
The expansion is also expected to support faster movement of freight trains operating through the corridor. Railway authorities said the route plays an important role in transporting industrial goods and essential commodities, including cement, automobiles, food grains, iron, and steel products.
Important Link in Chennai Circular Rail Network
In an official communication, railway authorities explained that the Arakkonam–Chengalpattu section forms a crucial part of Chennai’s suburban circular railway network. The corridor connects key stations such as Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, and Arakkonam, making it an important transportation link for both commuters and industries.
Officials noted that the current single-line section is already operating under heavy traffic conditions. With passenger numbers and freight operations expected to rise further in the coming years, the need for additional railway infrastructure had become increasingly urgent.
Improved Services and Higher Train Frequency Planned
Railway sources said the doubling of the track will help reduce train detention time and improve the overall efficiency of suburban operations. The project is also expected to increase the frequency of local train services, offering better travel convenience for commuters across several growing suburban regions.
The route passes through major industrial and economic centres, including Mahindra World City, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, and Irungattukottai. These areas are home to several automobile manufacturing units, industrial parks, and large-scale production facilities that depend heavily on railway connectivity for cargo transportation.
Future Airport Project Adds Strategic Importance
Railway officials further pointed out that the proposed Parandur airport project near Kancheepuram is located close to the planned railway alignment. Once the airport project moves forward, the importance of the rail corridor is expected to increase substantially, especially in terms of regional connectivity and transportation planning.
Authorities believe the railway expansion could play a supporting role in handling future passenger movement connected to the airport and surrounding industrial growth corridors.
Survey and Planning Process Already Completed
The Ministry of Railways had earlier approved the final location survey for the project in September 2023. Officials confirmed that the draft detailed project report was prepared by the end of 2025 after completing technical assessments and route studies.
The project was also reviewed during the 110th meeting of the Network Planning Group under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade on March 20 this year. During the review, planners discussed the alignment and infrastructure requirements for the proposed corridor.
Route to Include Multiple Stations
According to railway officials, the alignment will pass through 12 stations in total. This includes the major junction stations at Chengalpattu and Arakkonam, along with five crossing stations and five halt stations located across the route.
Although the Railway Ministry has approved the project, officials have not yet announced a timeline for the completion of construction work.
