PunjabPolitics – Akal Takht Directive Deepens Row Between Sikh Clergy and CM Mann
PunjabPolitics – Punjab’s political and religious landscape witnessed fresh tensions after a directive issued by the Akal Takht against Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann sparked strong reactions from Sikh leaders and political figures. The controversy revolves around a viral video that has triggered disagreement over its authenticity and the implications arising from it.

SGPC Member Supports Akal Takht’s Position
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Surjit Singh Bittawad backed the Akal Takht’s decision, asserting that the disputed video had undergone examination by a government-recognized agency. According to him, the assessment reportedly found no evidence of manipulation or digital alteration.
Bittawad stated that the agency’s findings indicated the footage was original and not generated through artificial intelligence technology. Referring to the religious body’s action, he said the directive reflected the seriousness with which Sikh authorities viewed the matter.
Call for Chief Minister to Appear Before Religious Authority
Emphasizing the significance of the Akal Takht’s order, Bittawad urged Bhagwant Mann to present himself before the highest temporal seat of Sikhism. He argued that if the Chief Minister considers himself a devoted Sikh, he should respect the institution’s authority and seek forgiveness.
The SGPC member also suggested that Mann should step down from his position and address the concerns raised by Sikh religious leadership. He maintained that members of the Sikh community traditionally hold the Akal Takht’s decisions in high regard and are expected to honor its directives.
Akal Takht Issues Community Directive
The development follows an announcement made by the Akal Takht under the leadership of acting Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj. In its decree, Sikh clergy instructed members of the Sikh community to avoid maintaining associations with the Punjab Chief Minister in connection with the ongoing controversy surrounding the video.
The decision has generated widespread discussion across Punjab, drawing responses from political leaders, religious organizations, and members of the Sikh community.
Bhagwant Mann Rejects Video Claims
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has firmly denied all allegations linked to the viral footage. In a video statement shared on social media, he dismissed the clip as fabricated propaganda aimed at damaging his public image.
Mann asserted that the individual visible in the video was not him and claimed there were clear physical differences between himself and the person shown. He reiterated that he had already informed religious authorities that he was not featured in the footage.
Allegations of Political Interference
The Punjab Chief Minister also questioned the circumstances surrounding the directive issued against him. While expressing respect for the authority and significance of the Akal Takht, Mann alleged that certain individuals occupying influential religious positions were acting under political influence.
According to him, attempts were being made to exploit religious institutions for political objectives. He described the controversy as part of a broader campaign designed to tarnish his reputation and rejected suggestions that the video served as credible evidence against him.
Opposition Leaders Continue Criticism
The issue has also drawn comments from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal. He maintained that the video was genuine and disputed claims that it had been created or altered using artificial intelligence.
Badal alleged that the footage had generated significant resentment among sections of the Sikh community when it first appeared online. He argued that the incident had deeply offended religious sentiments and therefore warranted serious attention from Sikh institutions.
Debate Likely to Continue
With religious authorities, political leaders, and community representatives expressing sharply different views, the controversy remains unresolved. The dispute has now evolved into a larger debate involving questions of authenticity, religious authority, political influence, and public accountability in Punjab.
