Punjab Congress – The Congress leadership is preparing a carefully balanced organisational strategy in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, choosing not to declare any leader as the party’s chief ministerial candidate at this stage. Instead, the focus remains on strengthening unity within the state unit while ensuring fair representation among senior leaders from different communities.

Leadership Formula Focuses on Unity

Over the past several days, senior Punjab Congress leaders have participated in a series of internal discussions with the party’s central leadership to resolve differences and build consensus. According to party sources, the leadership believes that announcing a chief ministerial face before the election could trigger unnecessary competition within the organisation. As a result, the party intends to keep its leadership structure balanced and defer the decision on the chief minister until after the election, if it forms the government.

Three Leaders in Race for State President

Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that three senior leaders are being considered for the position of Punjab Congress president. The names under consideration include former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, and former Member of Parliament Vijay Inder Singla. While the final decision is yet to be announced, the central leadership is expected to distribute responsibilities in a manner that maintains equilibrium among experienced leaders.

Community Representation Remains a Priority

The party leadership is also giving significant importance to maintaining political balance between Hindu and Sikh communities. Congress leaders believe that both voter groups will play an important role in the upcoming Assembly election. The party does not want to overlook Hindu representation, particularly after the ruling Aam Aadmi Party appointed Aman Arora as its Punjab president, a move widely viewed as an attempt to strengthen its outreach among Hindu voters.

At the same time, Congress leaders believe that support from Sikh voters, especially within the Jat community, remains equally important. Party insiders feel that recent political developments surrounding Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the controversy linked to him are likely to continue influencing the state’s political environment in the coming months.

Organisational Changes Linked to National Reshuffle

Sources also suggested that the delay in announcing Punjab Congress’s organisational restructuring is connected to broader changes expected within the party’s national leadership. Discussions are reportedly underway regarding the future responsibilities of All India Congress Committee leaders, including Bhupesh Baghel, who currently oversees Punjab affairs, and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, who is handling Rajasthan while also being considered for a major role in Punjab.

The central leadership is understood to be coordinating these appointments together so that both national and state-level organisational changes can be announced in a structured manner.

Decision Expected Soon

Congress Working Committee member Vijay Inder Singla said that the party’s high command is likely to finalise and announce the new organisational structure for the Punjab unit within the next two to three days. Party leaders expect the exercise to strengthen coordination within the state organisation before preparations for the 2027 Assembly election gather pace.

For now, Congress appears committed to avoiding leadership disputes while presenting a united organisation capable of addressing political challenges in Punjab. The strategy reflects the party’s effort to balance experience, seniority and community representation as it prepares for the next electoral contest.
