Prison – High-Security Jail Killing Sparks Fresh Questions Over Inmate Safety
Prison – The final rites of notorious dacoit Jagan Gurjar are scheduled to take place on Wednesday in his native Bhavutipura village in Rajasthan’s Dholpur district, days after he was killed inside Ajmer High-Security Jail. His body reached the village early in the morning, where relatives, local residents, and supporters had already assembled to pay their final respects before the cremation.

Post-Mortem Reveals Cause of Death
The preliminary post-mortem findings have indicated that Gurjar died due to strangulation after intense pressure was applied to his neck. According to the medical examination carried out by a six-member board of doctors, the assault resulted in a fracture of the hyoid bone, a critical injury that ultimately proved fatal. The report further noted extensive internal bleeding in the neck region, along with injuries surrounding the windpipe and food pipe. Medical experts concluded that the injuries caused suffocation, leading to his death within an estimated three minutes of the attack.
Family Ends Protest Following Administrative Assurance
Before the post-mortem was conducted, Gurjar’s family had staged a protest while demanding justice and a fair investigation into the custodial killing. The deadlock ended after discussions with district authorities, following which the autopsy was completed in Ajmer on Tuesday. The body was later transported to Dholpur for the funeral. Authorities also brought Gurjar’s younger brother, Pappu Gurjar, from Ajmer to Dholpur under strict police security so he could attend the last rites.
Murder Took Place Inside High-Security Barrack
Jagan Gurjar was killed inside Ajmer High-Security Jail on June 29. Family members have alleged that Vishnu, an undertrial prisoner facing charges in the Kuldeep Jaghina murder case from Bharatpur, attacked Gurjar by tightening a towel around his neck. Both inmates had been classified as hardcore prisoners and were reportedly housed in the same barrack when the incident occurred. Officials have not yet released the final findings of the investigation, and the circumstances leading to the fatal assault remain under examination.
Investigation Focuses on Security Failures
The custodial killing has triggered a detailed investigation into prison security arrangements. The incident has drawn widespread attention because it occurred inside one of Rajasthan’s most secure correctional facilities, where strict surveillance and monitoring are expected to prevent such attacks. Investigators are examining how the assault could take place despite multiple layers of security designed for high-risk inmates.
Non-Functional CCTV Raises Serious Concerns
One of the major issues emerging from the investigation is the reported failure of the CCTV camera installed in the barrack where the attack occurred. Officials have confirmed that the surveillance camera was not operational at the time of the incident, making it difficult to reconstruct the sequence of events through video evidence. The malfunction has intensified scrutiny of the prison administration, with questions being raised about maintenance of security equipment and overall monitoring inside the high-security facility. Authorities continue to investigate the murder while reviewing whether any negligence or procedural lapses contributed to the incident.
