PowerCrisis – Kerala is witnessing growing concern over electricity shortages as political tensions rise between the ruling government and the opposition. Reports of power disruptions during peak summer have triggered a sharp exchange of allegations, with both sides presenting contrasting explanations for the situation.
Opposition Alleges Policy Missteps Behind Crisis
Leader of the Opposition V. D. Satheesan has accused the state government of mishandling electricity planning, claiming that the present difficulties stem from the cancellation of long-term power purchase agreements. According to him, these agreements had ensured stable and affordable electricity supply in earlier years.
Satheesan argued that a deal finalized during the tenure of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, which secured 465 MW of power at relatively low rates, was discontinued without clear justification. He suggested that this move has compelled the state to procure electricity at significantly higher prices, placing a financial burden on the Kerala State Electricity Board.
He further alleged that the decision may have benefited private entities and called for a detailed investigation into the matter. Warning of public protests, he urged the government to immediately withdraw any restrictions affecting consumers.
Government Denies Load Shedding Claims
Responding to these allegations, Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty rejected claims of unannounced load shedding across the state. He clarified that the system is currently undergoing controlled regulation to manage excessive demand on the power grid, rather than intentional outages.
The minister pointed out that electricity consumption has crossed 6,000 MW, a level that requires additional procurement from costlier sources. He emphasized that the government is making efforts to maintain supply without increasing tariffs, which would otherwise impact consumers.
Krishnankutty also stated that the current strain on electricity resources is not unique to Kerala, noting that several regions across the country are facing similar challenges due to rising temperatures and increased usage.
Rising Demand Linked to Extreme Weather
Officials have attributed the spike in electricity consumption to intense heat conditions, which have led to higher use of cooling appliances such as air conditioners and fans. This seasonal surge has put pressure on the grid, making it difficult to maintain uninterrupted supply at all times.
The minister remarked that natural factors are playing a significant role in the current situation and expressed confidence that the imbalance between supply and demand would stabilize soon. He indicated that the issue is likely to ease within a short period if consumption patterns normalize.
Public Complaints Highlight Ground Reality
Despite official assurances, residents from various parts of the state have reported frequent short-duration power interruptions, particularly during nighttime hours. These outages, though brief, have caused inconvenience during the ongoing heatwave.
Consumer feedback suggests that while there may not be prolonged blackouts, repeated disruptions are affecting daily routines. The situation has intensified public attention on the state’s power management strategies.
