Politics – Vijay Criticises Tamil Nadu Government Over Rising Crime Concerns
Politics – Recent crime reports across Tamil Nadu have intensified political debate, with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay strongly criticising the state government over what he described as declining public safety. In a statement shared on social media on Thursday, the actor-turned-politician accused the ruling DMK administration of failing to maintain law and order and questioned its commitment to protecting citizens, particularly women and children.

Questions Raised Over Public Safety
Addressing Chief Minister MK Stalin directly through a post on X, Vijay expressed concern about a series of violent incidents reported across the state in recent weeks. He argued that the government must place greater priority on ensuring safety rather than focusing on maintaining political alliances.
Vijay wrote that residents of Tamil Nadu are increasingly worried about security, especially following multiple reports of crimes involving minors and elderly women. According to him, the situation has led many citizens to question whether the government has taken adequate steps to strengthen law enforcement and public protection.
Reference to Recent Criminal Incidents
In his remarks, Vijay cited several incidents that have drawn public attention. One of the cases involved the death of a 17-year-old girl in the Thoothukudi district. The teenager reportedly went out alone and was later found dead, an incident that has caused significant distress among local residents.
The grieving family has accused authorities of failing to respond promptly when the girl first went missing. As a result, protests were organised in the Kurukkusalai–Kulathur area, where residents joined the family in demanding swift action against those responsible and accountability from local police officials.
Another case mentioned by Vijay involved the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl near Maduranthakam. Such incidents, he said, have intensified fears among families regarding the safety of young girls in the state.
Concerns About Violence Beyond Civilian Targets
Vijay also pointed out that violent acts have not been limited to ordinary citizens. He referred to a recent attack on the office of Sivaganga Member of Parliament Karti Chidambaram, where unidentified individuals reportedly hurled petrol bombs at the premises.
Although the incident did not result in major injuries, it raised fresh concerns about political tensions and the safety of public representatives. Vijay argued that such developments indicate broader problems in maintaining security across the state.
Additional Issues Raised by TVK Leader
Beyond violent crime, Vijay highlighted concerns related to public health and safety in schools. He mentioned an incident in Coimbatore where dozens of students reportedly fell ill after food served at a school was contaminated when a lizard was found in it.
While authorities later took action to investigate the situation, Vijay said the episode reflects the need for stronger monitoring of food safety standards in educational institutions.
Political Context Ahead of State Elections
The criticism comes as Tamil Nadu prepares for its next assembly elections, expected to be held in April or May. Political parties across the state have already begun preparing for campaign activities and alliance arrangements.
The ruling DMK continues to lead a coalition that includes the Congress party, while the National Democratic Alliance is also finalising its electoral strategy. Both alliances are expected to announce detailed seat-sharing agreements as campaigning approaches.
Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, which was recently launched, is widely expected to make its electoral debut in the upcoming polls. Early indications suggest the party may contest independently, although formal announcements are yet to be made.
Previous Election Results Provide Political Backdrop
In the 2021 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, the DMK-led alliance secured a decisive victory. The coalition won 159 seats in the 234-member assembly, with the DMK itself winning 133 seats and forming the government.
The AIADMK emerged as the main opposition after winning 60 seats, while its alliance partner, the Bharatiya Janata Party, secured four seats in the state legislature.
As election preparations intensify, issues related to public safety, governance, and development are expected to feature prominently in the political discourse across Tamil Nadu
