Politics – DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin on Wednesday alleged that the Tamil Nadu government had used his detention to divert attention from issues affecting farmers, while insisting that the legal proceedings against him were politically motivated rather than based on genuine concerns.
Udhayanidhi Alleges Arrest Was Meant to Shift Public Focus
Addressing the controversy after being released following police questioning, Udhayanidhi Stalin said the action taken against him was intended to draw attention away from the challenges faced by the farming community. In a message posted on X, he rejected allegations surrounding his speech at a public protest and argued that the government was attempting to create unnecessary political distractions instead of addressing pressing public concerns.
He claimed that false narratives had been circulated about his remarks and accused those in power of relying on administrative machinery and political supporters to target the opposition. According to him, repeated legal cases and police action were designed to suppress criticism of the government’s performance.
Opposition Leader Defends His Political Stand
Udhayanidhi maintained that he had no hesitation in facing legal proceedings and said he would continue raising issues concerning farmers despite repeated action against him. Referring to his political background, he stated that he was prepared to face arrest whenever necessary if it meant standing with the farming community.
He also criticised the Chief Minister, alleging that the state’s leadership had failed to respond appropriately during previous crises. In his statement, he contrasted his own willingness to face police action with what he described as the government’s reluctance to accept responsibility during difficult situations.
The DMK leader further said he remained committed to travelling across the state to campaign for farmers’ welfare and thanked leaders of allied parties and party workers who publicly supported him following his detention.
DMK Questions Timing of Police Action
Senior DMK leader and advocate NR Elango also criticised the government’s decision to detain Udhayanidhi. He alleged that the move was timed to prevent the Leader of the Opposition from attending the first Budget session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly and raising important issues during the proceedings.
Elango argued that the government’s intention was to keep the opposition away from the legislature at a crucial political moment. His remarks came after the Madras High Court directed the Tamil Nadu Police to release Udhayanidhi once questioning in the case had been completed.
State Government Defends Its Position
The Tamil Nadu government strongly defended the action taken against the opposition leader. Energy and Law Minister Nirmal Kumar criticised Udhayanidhi over his alleged remarks made during a public gathering, stating that comments perceived as offensive towards women were unacceptable in public life.
The minister said that public representatives should exercise responsibility while addressing gatherings because their statements influence society. He added that any defamatory or obscene remarks directed at women would be dealt with under the law, regardless of the political affiliation of the individual involved, provided complaints were received by the police.
Protest Speech Triggered the Controversy
The controversy stems from a protest connected to the Cauvery water issue in Thanjavur. During the event, members of the audience reportedly chanted the name of actor Trisha while Udhayanidhi was addressing the gathering. His response was interpreted by some as carrying a double meaning, although he later clarified that his remarks referred only to the flow of Cauvery water.
Following the incident, the women’s wing of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) filed a complaint with the Thanjavur Police, alleging that the opposition leader had made an objectionable remark directed at the actor. The complaint led to a police case and subsequent questioning, which has since developed into a wider political confrontation between the ruling government and the DMK.
