Politics – The bail application filed by DMK legislator G.V. Markandayan is set to be heard before a court in Thoothukudi on Wednesday, following his arrest in connection with a defamation case linked to his alleged remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
The legislator, who represents the Vilathikulam Assembly constituency, was taken into custody by the Thoothukudi District Crime Branch after police registered a case over a speech delivered during a public meeting in Kovilpatti. Investigators alleged that the address included defamatory and provocative statements directed at the Chief Minister, leading to criminal proceedings against the MLA.
Police Investigation Followed Arrest
According to the police, Markandayan was detained on Tuesday morning and brought to the District Police Office for questioning. Officials said the interrogation lasted for nearly 11 hours as investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the speech and collected information relevant to the case.
The investigation focuses on comments allegedly made by the MLA during the public event. Authorities maintain that the remarks formed the basis for registering the case, while the inquiry is continuing under the provisions invoked by the investigating agency.
Court Rejects Police Custody Request
After the questioning concluded, the legislator was produced before the Judicial Magistrate No. I Court in Thoothukudi. During the hearing, the investigating officers sought police custody, arguing that additional interrogation was necessary for the ongoing probe.
However, Judicial Magistrate Sumathi declined the request. The court did not grant police custody and instead ordered that the MLA be placed in judicial custody for 15 days, with the remand extending until August 3. Following the order, Markandayan was transferred to Palayamkottai Central Prison.
Bail Petition Listed for Hearing
Soon after being remanded, the MLA approached the court seeking bail. The court admitted the application and scheduled it for hearing on Wednesday.
As per the court’s online cause list, arguments from both the prosecution and the defence are expected to be presented during the day’s proceedings. The decision on the bail plea could determine whether the legislator remains in judicial custody or is granted temporary relief while the investigation continues.
Political Attention on the Case
The case has drawn considerable political attention in Tamil Nadu because it comes amid heightened tensions between the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government and the opposition DMK. Leaders from both sides have reacted strongly to the arrest, giving the legal proceedings added political significance.
The DMK has alleged that criminal cases are being used to target opposition representatives, describing the arrest as politically motivated. On the other hand, the ruling side has rejected those allegations, stating that the investigation is being conducted according to the law and that every individual is subject to the same legal process irrespective of political affiliation.
