Politics – Tamil Nadu Coalition Talks Intensify After Split Assembly Verdict
Politics – Regional alliance discussions in Tamil Nadu gain momentum after the Assembly election results produced a fractured mandate, triggering negotiations among multiple political parties over government formation.

The political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu remained tense on Saturday as parties continued discussions to secure enough support for forming the next government after the recent Assembly elections delivered a hung verdict. The situation has led to sharp exchanges between leaders, especially over claims of political backing and allegations surrounding support letters.
DMK Questions TVK’s Strategy
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam spokesperson TKS Elangovan said the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam should first strengthen its numbers by holding talks with other parties before approaching Governor Rajendra Arlekar. He questioned the validity of support claims linked to AMMK legislators and said the matter should be clarified through proper investigation.
Elangovan also stated that if AMMK legislators were unwilling to support TVK, there would be no reason for any formal letter backing the party’s bid to form the government. He added that the ongoing police inquiry into the complaint would likely reveal the facts behind the controversy.
Allegations Over Political Bargaining
Senior DMK leader and Rajya Sabha MP P Wilson criticised the developments, alleging that attempts at political bargaining had surfaced even before the formation of a new administration.
In a message posted on social media platform X, Wilson remarked that Tamil Nadu had not witnessed such political manoeuvring for several years. He further said the developments contradicted promises of bringing a different political culture to the state.
Dispute Over Support Letter Deepens
The controversy escalated after AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran denied claims that his party had officially supported Vijay-led TVK. Dhinakaran personally visited Lok Bhavan on Friday and submitted a clarification to Governor Rajendra Arlekar after a letter circulating online claimed that AMMK MLA-elect Kamaraj had extended support to TVK for forming a coalition government.
Dhinakaran described the document as forged and sought immediate correction of the public narrative surrounding the issue.
However, TVK rejected the allegation and maintained that the support was genuine. The party also released a video that it said showed AMMK leader Kamaraj expressing support for TVK’s efforts to form the next government in Tamil Nadu.
TVK Defends Its Position
TVK accused Dhinakaran of spreading misleading information while withholding important details connected to the matter. Party leaders insisted that they were engaging in transparent political discussions aimed at securing stable governance in the state.
The Vijay-led party secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, leaving it short of the required majority mark of 118 seats. Since the results were declared, TVK has been reaching out to smaller parties and independent legislators to gather the support needed to stake claim to power.
Party representatives also asserted that TVK was not involved in any political bargaining and said discussions with allies were being conducted within democratic norms.
Smaller Parties Extend Support
Several opposition parties have already announced support for TVK’s attempt to form the government. The Congress party, which secured five seats, along with CPI and CPI(M), both holding two seats each, have publicly backed Vijay’s leadership.
These parties stated that they support the emergence of an alternative political arrangement in Tamil Nadu, which has traditionally been dominated by the DMK and AIADMK.
With negotiations continuing and political tensions rising, attention is now focused on whether TVK can gather enough support to cross the majority mark and formally present its claim before the Governor.
