Politics – Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday launched a strong political attack on Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chief K. Chandrashekar Rao, signalling an intensifying rivalry ahead of future elections. Addressing a public gathering in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, Reddy asserted that his party would continue to dominate the state’s political landscape and hinted at further setbacks for the opposition leader.
Political rivalry intensifies in Telangana
Speaking at the meeting, the Chief Minister expressed confidence in his electoral track record against KCR, claiming consistent victories in recent contests. He referred to the 2023 Assembly elections, the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, and local body elections as examples of what he described as a continued decline in the BRS leadership’s influence.
Reddy stated that upcoming elections would further establish which leader holds greater political ground in the state. His remarks reflected a broader strategy by the Congress leadership to consolidate its position following recent electoral successes.
Challenge over opposition leadership role
In a pointed remark, the Chief Minister challenged KCR’s position as Leader of the Opposition, suggesting that it could be under threat in the coming days. He framed this as part of a larger political shift, indicating that the Congress party is preparing to strengthen its presence across constituencies.
The comments also underscored the increasingly direct nature of political exchanges between the ruling Congress and the opposition BRS, with both sides seeking to mobilise public support ahead of future electoral contests.
Delay in Kaleshwaram probe raises questions
Reddy also addressed the pending investigation into the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, stating that the state government had formally requested a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry nearly nine months ago. According to him, the decision was made after consultations, including discussions with opposition leaders.
However, he expressed concern that the probe has yet to begin, alleging inaction at the central level. The Chief Minister reiterated that the state had sought accountability and punishment for those found responsible for alleged irregularities linked to the project.
Centre’s response under scrutiny
Referring to earlier statements by Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, the Chief Minister claimed that the Centre had initially assured swift action if the case was handed over to the CBI. He noted that despite those assurances, no visible progress has been made so far.
Reddy said the state government has recently sent another communication urging immediate initiation of the investigation. The delay, he suggested, raises questions about the handling of the case and the commitment to addressing alleged corruption.
Government vows corrective action on project
The Chief Minister also reiterated his administration’s commitment to repairing and restoring the Kaleshwaram project. He said technical assessments and meetings with experts had been planned in advance to address structural and operational concerns.
According to Reddy, the government aims to ensure that necessary corrective measures are implemented while maintaining transparency in the process. He emphasised that accountability would remain a priority as part of the broader effort to restore public confidence.
Allegations over political protection
Reddy also targeted BRS leader T. Harish Rao, alleging that recent political activities were aimed at securing support at the national level. He suggested that attempts to seek political backing would not prevent the state government from pursuing investigations if required.
The Chief Minister maintained that his administration would proceed with its plans regardless of political pressure, reinforcing the message that legal and administrative processes would be followed.
