Politics – Congress Criticizes AAP After Rajya Sabha Members Shift to BJP
Senior Congress leader Ajay Maken on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), accusing it of covertly supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His remarks came in the wake of seven AAP Rajya Sabha members joining the BJP, a move he said had exposed the party’s true political stance.

Allegations Over Political Alignment
Speaking at a press briefing, Maken alleged that AAP had effectively been working in alignment with the BJP, particularly in states where Congress remains a key rival. According to him, the recent defection of MPs has brought clarity to what he described as a long-standing but concealed relationship between the two parties.
He further claimed that AAP’s actions had undermined opposition unity and weakened Congress in states like Punjab and Gujarat. Maken argued that the party had functioned as a strategic counterweight to Congress, indirectly benefiting the BJP in electoral contests.
Questions Raised on Rajya Sabha Nominations
Maken also questioned the criteria used by AAP in nominating candidates to the Rajya Sabha. He alleged that individuals with significant financial resources were preferred, suggesting that monetary influence played a role in the selection process.
Citing figures, he stated that the average declared wealth of the seven MPs who switched allegiance was over Rs 818 crore. Based on this claim, he criticized the party’s image as representing the common citizen and remarked that its current functioning appeared inconsistent with that identity.
Concerns Linked to Punjab Politics
Referring to Punjab, Maken pointed out that despite the BJP receiving a relatively small share of votes in the state assembly elections, it now holds multiple Rajya Sabha seats from the region. He suggested that political developments involving AAP had contributed to this outcome.
Additionally, he raised concerns about alleged links between certain political elements and separatist tendencies, stating that such issues required careful attention. However, these claims were presented without additional supporting evidence during the briefing.
Reflection on Past Political Decisions
Maken also revisited Congress’s earlier decision to support AAP during its brief tenure in Delhi in 2014. He described that move as a miscalculation, saying it had unintentionally helped AAP establish a stronger political foothold in the capital.
He noted that decisions related to alliances are often influenced by broader coalition dynamics, particularly within opposition groupings. According to him, such choices are not always unilateral and may involve compromises among multiple parties.
Future of Opposition Alliances
On the question of future cooperation, Maken clarified that Congress has not entered into electoral alliances with AAP in state-level elections. He expressed uncertainty about any such arrangement going forward, indicating that recent developments could further complicate coordination among opposition parties.
Impact of Rajya Sabha Merger
The controversy follows the acceptance of the merger of seven AAP Rajya Sabha members into the BJP by the Chairman of the Upper House. This shift has significantly altered the balance of numbers, reducing AAP’s presence while strengthening the BJP’s position in Parliament.
Political analysts suggest that such changes could influence legislative dynamics in the coming months, particularly on key policy decisions requiring Upper House approval.
