Parliament – Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose on Monday strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent comments about student protesters, arguing that the government should accept responsibility for its handling of the demonstrations rather than speaking about forgiving the students. She maintained that both the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah should issue an apology over the police action linked to the protests.
TMC Questions Government’s Response
Addressing reporters, Ghose said the discussion should not focus on the language used by protesting students but on the government’s response to the demonstrations. According to her, those who led the administration during the police action should acknowledge their responsibility. She stated that instead of suggesting forgiveness for the young protesters, the country’s top leadership should express regret for the events that unfolded.
Opposition Continues Protest Over Student Demonstrations
Her remarks came as opposition parties, including members of the INDIA bloc, intensified their campaign against the government over the alleged police action during protests related to examination irregularities and paper leak allegations in Delhi. Opposition leaders have repeatedly sought an official statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and have continued to press for greater accountability on the issue.
Demonstration Held Inside Parliament Premises
Earlier in the day, opposition MPs organised a protest within the Parliament complex, questioning Amit Shah’s absence from the proceedings and demanding answers on multiple public issues. Senior leaders, including Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, participated in the demonstration.
The lawmakers gathered near the entrance to Parliament carrying a large banner asking why the Home Minister was not present in the House. They also raised slogans calling on him to respond to the concerns being raised by the opposition and demanding that he address Parliament directly.

The opposition is expected to continue pressing for a statement from Amit Shah in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha regarding the police action that took place during the July 20 protest in the national capital. The issue has remained in the political spotlight, particularly after reports of an alleged attack on the MP in Delhi on Sunday, adding another point of contention between the ruling alliance and opposition parties.

The protest took place on the eleventh day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, where confrontations between the treasury benches and the opposition have continued over several national issues. The session is also attracting attention amid expectations that the government could introduce amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA). If tabled, the proposed legislation is likely to trigger another round of intense debate as both sides prepare to defend their respective positions on matters before Parliament.
